I have a MCS 2008 and I don't have comfort access. For some reason, even after I have driven for an hour the fob is unable to lock and unlock the doors via the buttons. Should I schedule an appointment to get it checked out by BMW???

yup. not normal. non-comfort fob's batteries supposed to recharge. both your fobs don't work?
Happened to one of my keys too. They sent it back to Germany and had a replacement sent out from there (something about security and making sure noone tricks them into giving out extra keys).
Note that some of your profile settings are stored in the key (eg time format and stuff like that on the computer)
