In a general sense, sales tax rules vary from state to state and locality to locality. New Mexico, for example, has a vehicle sales tax rate of 3%, and any sales tax I end up paying in NM will be recognized by Arizona because the two states have a reciprocity agreement covering such things. This is part of the reason that I have for contacting a number of dealers across the southwest; and I'll be working with each dealer to understand any financial impacts I need to be aware of (as they are likely to be more familiar with their local sales tax rules regarding out of state buyers than I am).

In a more specific sense, I believe I read somewhere that Texas charges 0% sales tax on vehicle sales to non-residents (this excludes any local sales tax rate, I assume).

I once bought a car in Louisiana. They didn't charge me any sales tax but instead sent my title paperwork to the Harris County Tax Assessor/Collector here in Houston. A couple weeks later I got a postcard telling me to come in and pay my sales tax plus the license/title fees. I did get the "trade in" credit on taxes, same as I would have from a local dealer.

I appreciate the offer. Half the reason to buy out of state is to make a road trip out of it... but I'd like to keep it to a single day of driving, and FL to AZ is a bit far for that.
