stupid question

Okay, my car has been acting up so before I take her to the dealer I was doing a few odds and ends. I checked my oil, its only 2000mi old and it smells like gasoline, not super pungent, but I have owned over 33 cars and changed my oil in all the ones that didnt burn it never once encountering this smell, Is the smell normal....As as stated up until now I have never smelt oil like thins, Mobil 1 full Syn.

From the many, many posts in the "when to/how to change your oil" threads, it seems that because of the direct injection and high compression our engines tend to dilute a higher percentage of gas into the oil than other cars.

Whether or not yours is above average for our cars, there's no way to know unless you send a sample off for analysis.

If your getting gasoline past the rings into the oil thats not good. Gas is a solvent and will break down oil(even full synthetic)and reduce its lubrication ability. I would have the oil analized. Like Geekswrath said.

A compression test, or even better would be a leakdown test.

Check types of deposits seen on spark plugs when removed as well.

I suggest you heat up the car by running it at least 1/2 hour or more on the highway. Then check the oil again. Perhaps it is combustion by product and on a longer drive, it may be burnt off. Sometimes short trips can lead to some gasoline in the oil. If it is still there, then maybe look at compression as suggested.

Is there any grit in the oil? Is the oil dark?

This one is interesting. Perhaps you could post the results so we can get an idea of what is up.

And could the "acting up" be part of it?
