R56 0-60 Times
0-60 Times
So I am seeing 0-60 times that seem to be all over the map. From the mid sevens to Grassroots Motorsports 5.7 sec. on a stock MCS. What is up with the big differences. I was thinking of adding the JCW tune kit when I get my MCS later this month, but with a time like 5.7, who needs it?
Part of it could very well be the variation of "stock" minis. There is actually quite a bit of weight variability because of all of the available options many of which add weight. Also things like LSD vs open diff come into play and of course the driver makes a difference.
Don't shoot me but I didn't buy the MINI for it's 0-60 times, they are crap.
I think for a 4 cyl turbocharged car 6 seconds is slow. I know the gearing is set up for autobahns and autostradas, but if the lower gears were a little shorter it would be a touch quicker. I don't plan on putting any money into the engine, just not worth the reward.

0-60 mph times will vary due to conditions involved such as temperature, elevation, test equipment, etc.
For example Road & Track lists the '08 MCS for 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 15.0 @92.6 mph with a top speed of 139 mph* (electronically limited).
Another example Motor Trend in the October 2008 issue lists the '09 JCW MINI Cooper for 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds but states the mfr. est. so it could be a tad quicker then that until they can test one for themselves.

I don't much care for 0-60, just because all the power is on tap when you hardly step on the gas.... not like my old NA engine where you had to floor it to get any response.
But yeah, 6.5sec is not too impressive and not worth bragging about.

If you don't already have the LSD its not going to be very usable except on the open track. I would imagine 0-60 time spread is huge is due to tires. They use too many different brands and wheel weights and sizes to get anything consistent from the factory. Surely once you get the stock rubber out of there for a decent summer tire the times go down, and really drop with slicks. Given that torque is no issue with our car, if you want more performance wheel and tires are the best place if you haven't already.

One may say Mini's time is typical underestimated German figure, but my guess is something to do with overboost. Overboost gives you 10% extra in most street driving condition and that's what we feel in most driving condition. BMW won't publish a super optimal once in a life time 0-60mph figure, but more like a time can be repeated all day long by a professional driver without the help of overboost.
It feels like 4.2 seconds when I'm driving but I think it is a little bit longer.
please don't get me wrong, I love Minis.
Your on the money Eric. My "other" car is in the 4's, and your right about that smile, ear 2 ear.

I'd bet there's a little acceleration inflation going on over time between car magazines, too. If R&T comes out and says 6.5, and you're a writer for C&D, you don't want to publish your time as 6.8.

I was quite impressed with the MCS launch. It's not comparable with a modern muscle or hi-performance sports car, but it's definitely comparable with an 80s Vette or 5.0 Mustang. I remember when the car mags were gushing over the Mazdaspeed 3 and saying it was as fast as a particular model of old Ferrari (and not the Dino).
It's not a purebred sportscar; it is its own animal, really. What's out there like a Mini? Nothing.

My current car is an '05 Pontiac GTO - 0-60 in 4.6 or 4.7 seconds. And yes, it can go through a set of rear tires in a day without really trying. But on the days when I have a choice, I take my wife's just-a-Clubman instead of my car. Why? Its more fun to drive, plain and simple. Its not all about speed.
And come this Saturday (come on, hurry up) I'll have my own MINI to drive again. Finally, the waiting is almost over.

well it would be interesting if I had a decent data acc system, but from my autox videos its right at 3 seconds through 1st gear on yoko advans, so that should be about the 0-40 time. mid 6s are probably a good launch on stock rubber, but with the grip it can do a lot better. I was always surprised how much kick the car has considering I bought it almost exclusively for the handling.

The JCW tune kit won't change the 0-60 time. Where you will notice a very big difference is on the highway going 50-75. More torque all along the curve. Also, you can be at 3000 rpm in sixth gear and there will still be some passing power available. Try it with the regular MCS and you'll see there's nothing there.
