Welcome to the world of depreciating assets (and they call this asset???).

If they offered you $26K, you should be able to get perhaps around $1-$2K more. You know the longer you wait, the more it drops...

I think slinger688 hit the nail on the head. When I'm looking for a MINI, I'm comparing what I'd have to pay for the used one with what I'll have to pay for a new one. Since I have no interest in those mods, I'm not willing to pay anything for them. I addition, I want a discount for buying a used vehicle.

In order for you to get top dollar, you need to find the buyer who wants exactly those mods on his/her new MINI. Then they'll see yours as a bargain. Hence it'll probably take longer to sell, since your target market is smaller.

If u make mods like i have my entire life ive always found it easier to sell my car because of them . U just need to no the best places to market it. In NY u have plenty of wealthy families looiking to buy there kids a used car they want to drive around in.

You're being offered 87% of the original price of the car. This is very little depreciation. The mods may have been expensive, but they probably make the car harder to sell privately, not easier, as you need to find someone who wants the particular mods you added, and is willing to pay for them. If you need a quick sale, the carmax offer is in the ballpark.

Another vote for craigslist, i shopped there for weeks before I bought my 08 just a cooper. while frowned upon, remove your ad and repost often.

do you have the orig wheels sell the wheels separate if so. the parts of a car are worth 150% at least of the price of the whole car. that is why cars get stolen and stripped.

One note about the JCW bodykit - a prospective buyer isn't going to care how much it cost you to have the old bodywork removed and have the JCW kit painted/installed. Labour involved in replacing one factory option (the original bodywork) with another factory option (the JCW kit) is a sunk cost and shouldn't add anything to the resale value.

If you're expecting a bump in the price because of the JCW body kit, you should base your expectations on how much extra the car would have cost if you had ordered it with the JCW kit to begin with, not how much it cost you replace the stock body kit with the JCW one. Then take that number and knock 30-40% off of it.

Not quite sure what you may be suggesting here in the context of selling the car ...

I think what he's saying is that if the OP still has the original wheels that he can sell with the car, the JCW wheels are worth a lot more off the car than on it.

Just a little "bad" humor on my part. I hope there was no harm. I got his meaning...

While the JCW wheels may be worth more off the car, overall, I am not sure if you will get that much, perhaps $1K plus a little more pain.

If you could sell the car for $28K with the JCW wheels, you could sell the car for $27.5K with stock wheels and sell the JCW wheels for $1000. That way you make $500 more. I think that's what the thief analogy was saying.

I still say pay the cheesey custom fees and import it to Greece (or wherever you said you were being transferred to) unless there is another reason you want to sell it.... I think I paid about 200 euros to import my vehicle to Portugal for 2 years. After I seen how inexpensive it was, I had two additional vehicles shipped (one of which was my Harley). I think having an American spec'd Cooper looking as good as yours would bring you many happy miles. Ciao.

Agree on selling mods

I agree with selling the nice wheels separately if you don't mind the extra hassle.

Also, you may want to remove the intake. You can sell it separately, or not bother, but I think you'll open up your buyers' market if you can tell them the motor and drivetrain are unmolested/unmodified.

A lot of times, even the tuners want to start with a clean slate. And I think that people not interested in tuning never want to touch a car with motor mods.

They don't want a car with mods on it. I went there with a lowered civic then I just asked them to estimate what they would give me once it was back to OEM. Of course they didn't listen and did a current appraisal and offered me 4k for it, which I turned around privately and sold for 9k. Any non BMW mod except wheels is not going to help you value and many performance mods will lower it.

Carmax is just that: they wanna make the max on your car when they take you to the cleaners for it. You gotta get out there and do the work if you wanna get decent money back. Carmax is for lazy dudes who need money fast. Sorta like paycheck loan places. You may or may not get anything for the mods. I sat put it on ebay for 26-7k and take good pix and hope for the best. Craigslist too.

The economy is SLOW! Credit is tight for everyone, even people with good credit. As others have said, CarMax.

Joe Schmoe might disagree. Joe Schmoe might choose not to buy a car because he doesn't like the bonnet stripes, or roof graphic, but he might choose to buy that car because it has those things.

It's a complete toss up, and totally subjective.

Good luck selling the car.

Who is this Joe Schmoe you speak of?

I didn't see the ad but I read a previous poster saying you were trying to get 32K for the car?

For an '08? Used? Highly unlikely....

I paid 31K for my '08Mcsa. I've added the JCW kit and it already had the JCW brakes. Other than stripes, tinted windows and clear bra, it was stock.

The dealer got a JCW identical to mine but it was a factory JCW. Since I needed to act fast to get the car, I had to trade mine in. The dealer would only give me $26.5K

Assuming the dealer is going to try to make 2-3K on that deal, they would be selling it for roughly 28-29K.

I'd say that would be the ballpark you're going to be looking at IMO.

You're kidding me, right? The car is lowered with a factory JCW kit and wheels and you automatically assume it's a young male racer and he's interested in a Mustang GT?

Man..... talk about profiling....

Guess since I'm 45 and have the same setup, I must want a GT too...

Sorry, but that was about the same as assuming he's Italian and wants a Camaro with gold chains around his neck...

Mark

PS. Hell NO I didn't trade my car in at 26.5K

PSS. I checked out the ad. I think your price at 28.5 is much more reasonable... now you're just going to have to wait and find the right person. The car looks great so hopefully it sells fast for you.

And as far as those that say that mods don't increase value, completely true to the average person BUT if you find the one person that is going to do those mods anyways, it sure helps to make the sale.

Good luck on your sale, Good luck on your move to Greece...
