Why can't I sell this car... ?
 

Hey Nam Fam someone please look at my Ad in the Marketplace for a 2008 MCS Astro Black and please tell me what I am doing wrong or what am I not doing for this car to sell!!! i have tried everything and nothing seems to be working I have actually dropped the asking $$$ much lower than when i even bought the car bone stock.....?

I am starting to pack for my position overseas and really need to sell this moden day marvel any tips are very very welcomed!!! THANKS GUYS/GIRLS!!

Not to be rude....it's just that maybe I'm misunderstanding you.

Isn't it understood that you'll sell a used car for "lower than when you bought the car"? It's not like you can sell the car used and get what you paid for it, or get more than what you paid for it.

as the others have mentioned....companies like carmax will give you a good deal. MINI's are in demand right now for their gas mileage so companies like that would love an 08 MINI :thumbsup:

The car was bought "bone stock", with the JCW Aero Kit, intake and tint added afterwards. I think that's what mnimule is getting at.

@minmule: hopefully NAM isn't the only place you're posting your ad. Generally speaking I would think most NAM regulars already have Minis.

It's a fair price, much better than the original asking price. Considering we're in a bad economy, people right now are trying to get more bang for their buck. Can you imagine what someone can buy for that amount of money? Have you tried to list it on cars.com or craigslist? It'll sell but it'll take a while. Good luck!

If you must sell the car immediately, try ebay with no reserve. You may get lucky.

If you want a confirmed higher price, you may have to spend some time selling it. Local newspapers can help along with the ones already mentioned. Also try CarMax or AutoNation...

mods don't equal a higher price. you can't expect to increase the price of your car due to aftermarket mods.

Yeah its true. You can NEVER get your money back from the mods you put into your car. Doesnt matter how much or what kind. But it will sell, it is SO HOT!!:)

MODS add no value at all, and may decrease base price due to problems in the future.

Definitely do EBAY....lots of MINI's there..

Even if you've added an intake or tints....those won't increase the re-sale of the car. If anything, they might lower the resale of the car in some peoples' eyes including a trade-in appraiser.

Intakes and performance mods could potentially scare off buyers.

But tint ?

Just like vinyl aesthetic mods, if they don't like it, take it off. In fact, the paint under the vinyl will be in great shape. And the glass under the tint will be fine, dontchyathink ??

Yah, tint will usually come off fine. All I was saying was that just because you've got some added mods, you should still expect to get well below what you paid for the car stock.

I don't think tint would depreciate the value, but it won't increase the value either.

Okay, that I can agree with. Didn't sound like what you were saying when you said....

I just sold my '06 using Craig's List. Had it on E-Bay for a week with no results. Including the tax paid when I bought it as part of the cost I'm getting 70% of the original value of the car after 2.7 years of ownership. I sold it for $2,500 less than where I started. It's also obvious that while my mods did help to attract the buyer, they didn't help the selling price.

You can not sell it because you are asking $32,500 while a new 2009 can be had for under $27,000. Options mean nothing to the next buyer and aftermarket doodahs are a price reducer.

CarMax will give you a fair price. Good luck in Greece but tread lightly if you carry a US passport and aren't fluent in the language.

Best approach is to keep OEM parts when you do mods. Then when you go to sell the car, restore it back to stock and sell of the mod parts separately. You'll do a lot better that way.

If you have access to ebay prices, you can see what similar cars have sold for over the last few months and can set a better price. Just sign up as a buyer or seller. I know they used to give you access to this info.

The guides like Edmunds are useful but tend to be a little high especially the retail price.

Once you have established a fair price, then you have to get the news out there to as many places as you can. Then you have to deal with the low ballers and free riders ...

I would think that it would entirely depend upon the mods. I'd gladly pay more for an Alta MINI (did you guys hear the test drive of that thing on WRR? OMG!) than I would for an OEM vehicle. Will I pay more for a car because it has the JCW Aero kit or bonnet stripes? No. I don't feel that those things add value to the car.

Joe Schmoe might disagree. Joe Schmoe might choose not to buy a car because he doesn't like the bonnet stripes, or roof graphic, but he might choose to buy that car because it has those things.

It's a complete toss up, and totally subjective.

I guess that is the bigger picture point. The more stuff you put in a car, the more limited the audience you will have willing to pay for it. You will be looking for that unique individual.

In 2006, I bought a one year old 2005 Lotus from the Lotus dealer that was heavily modified with about 20K in extras for less than base no options MSRP. About 1/2 the mods were factory. He had listed the car for six months with no takers.

However when i meant lower than when i bought it, I meant i bought it for $30,000, added tints, DDM intake no money there!!

but i have added the JCW body kit after market alot of $$$ there and also the 18" R113 JCW wheels with tires all after market these also cost alot of extra $$$

So what im saying is that I am selling this car for lower than what i purchased it even before all the extra costly additions..... I went to carmax they offered me $26,000 for this car :eek2: :eek2: :eek2:

Mods aren't necessarily detrimental to selling a car slower than an oem vehicle. It all depends where you advertise and the condition of the car. There's someone out there that wants that particular car. I sold a modded car in less that l2 hours that was 4 years old and had 70,000 miles. Craigs list is the way to go, believe me.
