R56 After 2 months ownership
My daughter (8 years old) teared up at the thought of me parting with the Mini, and my wife reminded me that we still have a Tahoe and a Range Rover when the need to haul others and gear occurs. I guess I need to just view it as our around town and personal commuter. That should work. It is a kick for all that, and a land rocket to boot.
BTW: she wouldn't get rid of her Range Rover even if gas went up to to $10 a gallon, and I need the Tahoe (with beefed up suspension and engine) to tow my 6K lb boat.
The Pooper stays

The Pooper stays

And a wise decision
Yes the MINI would be great for road trips w/ two but not so much with more. I think what I am trying to get at is that MINIS are practical*** they make sense in today's world, and are capable of 99% of what the world has to throw at them.
That's my opinion of course

It's kinda funny how there were very few "disappointed" type posts when the first gens first came out--and there seems to be more and more disillusioned R56 owners with complaints like--too little room, too little power, worried that something might go wrong even though nothing has, cosmoline drips are unacceptable......Was is just that the early MINI owners were more willing to make compromises or were we just more aware of what we were buying into??
Regardless, here is how I made my R53 a MINI "van" on a road trip from California to Colorado with 2 adults and a 4 year old inside.

And for my son--I cut up the headrest and mounted a swiveling LCD monitor with a DVD player up front.

The best thing about these mods is that you can remove them 100% and end up with the same fun to drive MINI for the 99.9% of the time you aren't hauling people and cargo. I'd much rather do that than compromise with a larger less fun car to drive that eats up more gasoline!

That's my exact plan!!! now I just have to get my Jeep running by end of november when I take delivery on the mini...
That's why I never got rid of my Jeep Liberty. Sometimes I just need the passenger room, need the cargo space, need the road clearance, need the toughness and need to be able to park anywhere. The roads in downtown Honolulu suck, my Mini could disappear in some of the potholes down there. Last time I drove my Mini to a festival downtown I literally parked one mile away because it was so crowded and cars were parked so close to each other.
I find the cabin to be quite spacious.
As much or more than any other car I've had.
It's a short car not small.
And I agree, go to most places on the planet it
is midsized.

"take what the man gives you and like it"
Perhaps you should practice that for your coworkers (?).
Other solution - get something like a 1975 el dorado just
for airport trips. Plenty of leg and trunk room.
Another solution - the turtle on top.

This reminds me of a long ago story.
I had a semi friend that was going to graduate school
on the free ride. I had a day job and was going to school
at night. He was about 6 6" (former basketball player).
I get a call at 1 am on a work night. Hey man, I've been
towed come get me. OK, an emergency no problem.
A couple weeks later I get a call again near 1 am.
Hey man, I've been towed, come get me.
From the exact same spot I might add.
So I drive him (again) to BFE to the impound lot, way way
south of town from where I live. As he's getting out
of my honda with these contrived little grunts, he has
the unmittigated gaul to say
HEY MAN YOU NEED TO GET A BIGGER CAR, and walks off.
I turned my phone off after that at night.
He was also moved from semi friend to non friend status.
Yet another solution- you need different friends/co workers.

IF your situation wasn't about hauling passengers AND their golf clubs you could possibly consider removing your rear seats and putting in one of those kits that replace the seat area, giving more room for gear.
No Mini is worth losing over a bunch of golf clubs.
This is the wisdom of my people.
No Mini is worth losing over a bunch of golf clubs.
Anything more is excessive.
