Hood scoop on 08

Why does mini have the hood scoop covered underneath .What would happen if we remove those four clips and the backing plate?

I'm sure the engine would just get very dirty but you can wash it.Atleast air flow will come inside the hood area

My scoop is open to the engine compartment. About half of the grill part is open. You can see straight through it.

I believe it's actually some sort of felt insulation, mine has it too. Given all the talk about melting scoops I won't remove it.

I understand that,But opening up the scoop to flow air should help reduce heat some. I'm thinking we need to install this to help with keeping heat off hood and scoop area.

Mine is open too. With the hood closed I can look in and see the engine. I know from driving in the rain my engine is dirty. If I open the hood there is a black insulation pad, but it is a couple of inches past the opening for the scoop. I can take a pic if you want to compare.
