Factory ipod adapter - aftermarket installation

Looking at buying an ipod adapter for my '08 MC. The adapter runs around $300 or so, but from what I read, looks like it's not just plug-and-play, rather needs to be programmed by the dealer in order for the factory radio to recognize it. So... my local dealer wants $125 just for the programming, and won't budge even though it probably will take 10 mins.

So my question is... will it for sure not work without the programming? What exactly is involved in the programming and is there absolutely no way to get around taking it to the dealer?

Thanks!

It will not work without the programming, no way to get around it. Look in the Navigation & Audio section for threads on the install.
