I thought the police report thing was futile also but I think it is required in order to put a security hold w/ the 3 credit agencies. Something you should do so that they can't open lines of credit in your name, I think the hold is good for 7 years or so.

Don't forget to contact the credit bureaus as well as the card companies as well. They can keep people from opening credit in your name.

Sorry, that does in fact suck.

That really sucks :( I guess you have to have it happen once to you before it really sinks in.

My wife left an empty purse in her backseat one night. She was parked in our driveway. The next morning the back window was shattered, there was a huge ding in the door from the crowbar and the purse was gone. It was completely empty. Now I'm nervous about leaving even my sunglasses out in plain view.

Man, that sucks! Why couldn't they just have smashed the window? Why bother messing with your A-pillar? Goons. I hope they're like the Wrong Trousers of Wallace & Gromit fame:

A bunch of houses in my neighborhood (not my street, fortunately!) had their tires slashed (in driveways and on the street) last night. What the f*#! makes people do things like this?

Best story I have, though, is when my husband had a car broken into. He had one of those radios with the faceplate you take off and take with you. Without the faceplate, the radio was worthless (or you'd pay about $400 for a new faceplate). What did they take? Yup, the faceless radio.

Borla vs Alta Exhaust?

Hi!!
I've been checking out exhaust systems, I narrowed it down to Borla and Alta.
I like the Borla "Agressive" and the Alta "Stealth" with the oval tip. What is the general opinion of these systems? Is one louder than the other? Any additional information on this will be of great help.
Thank's...........Steve!

That Sucks, On a positive note... Your lucky they didn't use your car as a bathroom as well.
There's one thing that bothers me though, from the look of it, I almost think it was someone who works on cars, or even works on Mini's.
Not all cars have that type of trim so it's kind of an awkward access point.
Hope it all gets resolved for you smoothly..

Leaving a wallet in a car is just a really stupid thing to do regardless. There is too much information and in nearly any location the crime becomes worthwhile for petty thieves. They may think a bit about electronics and other various things based on how much they can pawn them for, but a wallet is no hassle money and information. Just hope that they are stupid enough to use your cards at a place with surveillance. Although I doubt any police will be interested when there are perfectly easy traffic violations to hand out.

That sucks... I wish you well getting everything replaced (And I would totally dig retro plaid pants!)

My current Miata (MINI not getting here for a couple more weeks) was broken into 3 times. Twice they slashed the roof (hence no more covertibles) but there was nothing in the car. This was in a parking garage for my apartment. Security thinks it was someone pissed at the management because a brand new mustang convertible also got hit. (He had his top replaced first time - then they hit it again the same night they got mine... took his jacket.) I just had the roof stiched up since I figured it could happen again.

Then, when I was singing karaoke at a club where everyone knows me.. someone ripped out my door handle - literally ripped it out of the door... then broke the window when that didn't open the door.. again - nothing in the car was stolen. (I figure this was someone pissed that I won the karaoke contest the week before.... or a crazy ex-boyfriend.)

Several years ago, someone broke into my Eagle Talon while it sat in my parents driveway. I was home from college for the weekend, and had decided last minute to stay overnight and leave the next morning before class (1 1/2 hours back to school). They broke a window - then took the 6 disc changer in the trunk and the radio. But they were nice thieves... they pulled up the carpet to get all the wiring, then put all the carpet back in its proper place. They then left all the screws in neat little piles next to where the missing equipment was. And this was all in a small cove where everyone knows everyone - not off a main street. just goes to show that there's no where really safe.

I just know if someone messes with Jude when he gets here, I will go ballistic.

A lot of people seem to jump on the "you shouldn't leave your wallet in your car" angle... I, for one, hope the day comes when we may all leave 10 wallets on our dash without fear of anything happening to them.

I wish for that day too. Especially here in South Africa. You cant even drive around with valuables visible in your car. Everything goes into the boot and I mean everything.

Sorry for your loss and damage to your MINI it sure does suck.

There's three places I have visited where my car has been broken into.
One was New York City where my car was broken into during the middle of the day on Avenue of the Americas with
thousands of people just walking by as the the thief(s) broke out the window and stole all our Christmas gifts out of the back seat.
We never thought someone would be so bold as to break into our car in pure daylight on a very busy street...

Washington DC (Arlington, Va. to be exact) is the second place that I have had my car broken into.
On this particular evening the moron was just smashing everyones windows and grabing whatever he could find.
The door locks on my car didn't even work so it wasn't locked if he would have just tried to open the door instead of smashing the window.
He was so greedy breaking into more cars that I was able to show him what the barrel end of my .45 looks like.

And the last place that I have had problems with people insisting on taking what is not theirs is Hialeah Florida...This place takes the cake.
I have had a boat stolen from the front of my sisters house.
I have had a bolted-in metal toolbox ripped out of my old pickup truck with all the tools in it.
I have had my Toyota 4Runner with dark tinted windows broken into as we arrived at my sisters house and were in the midst of taking stuff out of it.
No recovery luck with any of the stuff taken in Hialeah although I'm pretty sure I could have found most of it at the Opa Locka flea market..

Sorry about your loss.. Here's hoping that really bad luck finds them...

But I wonder if the thief or thieves were truly amatuer. It seems to me that they went to alot of trouble to get into the MINI. The thief went so far as to remove the plastic around the window and then pop the window out. No smash and grab? Seems to me that an amatuer would have just busted the window out as in the scenario that cabriopilot describes.

Good luck to you and hope that those pants really do squeeze him to death!

Sorry to hear that yet another Mini has been broken into.

I guess it won't be an excellent moment in your life if you see these awesome pants strolling around on someone else anytime soon?

Man... and I was ticked that someone ripped off my 8-ball antennae ball while we were in Chicago. I mean - who does that?
Sorry to hear about your troubles. I pay for it, but I'm glad to have my renters insurance that covers the crap in my car, and my auto insurance with a $200 comp deductible.

Firebolt, I feel your pain my friend. I too have had cars broken into and its absolute misery when it happens. I don't leave anything in my cars anymore as a result except for this weird ankle bracelet that I bought at Claire's which has flowers on it, because it screamed Viola when I saw it...

I just have one question though. I understand the wallet, the ipod touch, and everything else they did, it makes sense... but I have to know: Why in the heck were you not wearing those freakin' pants if they were so awesome! What's the matter with you?

I won't chime in on stupidity, yes stupidity, of leaving any valuables in the car. It does not matter where you are at, you are going to get hit.

My trick is to tell would be criminals that they will not even find a stray Junior Mint candy in my car. How?

I leave my glove box empty at all times. When parked I keep the glove box open so that people see that it is empty, the assumption being that I have taken care to keep the car clear of anything that might be stolen.

I also do NOT leave a jacket in the back seat, that is usually there when I am driving [most window smash burglars assume you are hiding something good under the jacket.]

If you have a device [GPS Nav, radar detector] mounted to a window with suction cups, when parked remove the mount and clean the suction cup marks with Windex. Thieves target cars with suction cup marks assuming that all you did was tuck the device under the seat [which 90% of people do.]

Lastly, be fully insured, not only for auto and its contents get as low a deductible on non-collision coverage [that covers theft, vandals, parking lot abusers]. But also get renters insurance if you don't have homeowner coverage. Renters or homeowners insurance covers all home or residence personal property that is stolen from a car.

How cleaned out should your glove box be? See below. Not even cheap pens in the holder to steal.

They took my wallet, Itouch 16gig, and a pair of really cool pants i bought from a thrift shop the night before! I know, I know, i shouldn't leave valuables in there in the first place, but i have heavy tints and didn't think much of it. Either way, my deductible is too high to have an insurance claim, i'm at risk of having my identify stolen, i have no music to listen to, and i have to pay for a new window and be without a car for a couple of days. Moral of the story- take your junk out of your car, or at the very least, put it in the secret compartment. Oh and never travel withyour Social security card...even if its just for one day!
Contrary to popular belief, deductables for comprehensive coverage are not that bad....no much so, I carry zero ded for comprehensive.

that sucks,

my neighbor had his car broken into and then purchased this:
http://www.homesecuritystore.com/ezS...productID=1082
with this:
http://www.homesecuritystore.com/ezS...productID=1019

It's a monitor system that is wireless and lets you add window, door, and motion sensors to the system. He says it works great and senses when people are near his driveway. I keep my cars in the garage, yet am thinking of getting this for inside the garage to sense motion at night (in case anyone breaks the side door to my garage). I have my Mini and a Porsche in the garage and would be extremely pissed if either were stolen while I slept. I guess this system give you an audible alarm at the reciever when it senses motion ...I plan on keeping the receiver near my bed

you may want to check out something like this??

Hey guys. I really appreciate all your advice and condolences. I'm going to look into getting that surveillance system you suggested. Its pretty cheap, simple, and effective enough.

I bought her to the body shop today, where they told me that it'll be just a couple of hours to get her back to 100%. Five hours later, i call and they told me that their having some trouble with her. Its a very respectable shop, but i guess they have never taken apart a mini door before. Either way, they said i'll have my car in tomorrow? i hope.

PS- If the estimate they quoted me included 1 hour of labor...but they're obviously taking longer because they can't figure something out...i'm not responsible for that.....right?!

????? ummmm Perhaps a large wooden badger!!

Anyway,
Sorry you got ripped off. Been a long time since I've had that feeling.
I got very, very lucky the other night, left my truck (read passed out)
in my driveway, unlocked, keys in it, wallet, garage opener, check book,
no pants tho. But I'm glad nobody benefitted from my absent mindedness.
Now where's my beer....
