"With 4 Blizzaks on 15" wheels, no LSD, I was able to go anywhere all-wheel drive could go in snow this past winter. I was very impressed."
Ditto for me. Only problem I've ever encountered is when the snow is deep and heavy enough that the wheels don't reach the ground (and I've never had that except in my own driveway).
Michigan winters, Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2 snows on 16" S-winders, LSD, DSC, Etc, no problems at all. Lewis went anywhere I asked him to. I wasn't stupid and didn't ask him to go through more than a few inches of snow, but I'm sure he would have. I hadn't driven a car that light in snow before, so it took a little getting used to, but we were cool after a couple days and snow didn't keep me from going anywhere.
Used our MINI all winter in the snow, ice, rain and dry without issue. My SO (it's her MINI, I'm just the pit crew) works near Valley Forge so it was driven in PA all winter. I made a point to take it out during or after each big storm for a little fun in the snow pretending to be Tommi Makinen. Our car has LSD, DSC and shod with 205/45R17 Blizzak LM-25's. Like a lot of FWD cars the MINI is very stable in low traction conditions. The LM-25's are great in the snow/ice but unlike a lot of dedicated winter tires, it's also pretty good in the dry (for a winter tire). IMHO a great winter tire.
My wife ran her '07 S without issue this past winter here in Minnesota. Manual, LSD, 16" dedicated directional snow tires. When it got real nasty she took my Subaru.
