Trusting an auto manufacturer is like trusting a government to do the best thing for it's people.

In this instance, not only does it cost the manufacturer less (they don't do oil changes as often), but it makes the car look like it has a very low maintenance cycle (for making claims to the sheeple).

The manufacturer is in it to make MONEY!!

Do you trust any institution who's sole aim in life is capital gain?

It's not about being cynical, it's about being realistic. Dealers make nearly as much money (maybe more??) per car when they make off-warranty repairs then they do when they sell the car. So, who does nursing used oil benefit, you or the manufacturer/dealer?

More. Especially since everyone thinks they should pay invoice for a car or they are getting ripped off.

I have about 6,850 miles on it now. I hear that it is like the gas gauge -- optimistic at first, but rapidly drops near the end.

I changed my oil shortly after break-in (around 1,500 miles). I changed it again two days ago and just send a sample off to Blackstone Labs for analysis. They will do a standard analysis and a check on additive levels. That should give an idea of how much life was left on this oil.

I've been using MINI branded synthetic 5W-30, which was blended specifically for BMW by Castrol. I should have results by the end of next week.
Hey Robin - any update?

Have fun rebuilding your motors at 65k miles!
Would appear the rebuilt engine may have a few parts installed backwards if it gives that much wear in 300 feet. But in any case, just wanted to resurrect this thread for those like me who have seen a dramatic change in the computer generated life expectancy of their oil. I went 11,000 on the first change and after turning 20k last week the computer now says 7,500 before the next change. A 75% change seemed kind of dramatic, but then I never exceed 90mph at this point, something I did with some frequency when the car was new.

Well my break-in is over at about 1250 miles, and I ordered two kits from Blackstone (one for me and one for Amy's 2007 MINI w/ 4000 miles). I'll post the results after I get them back (probably won't be for a couple of weeks).
