Nothing posted yet - I'm sure the OP's insurance company is busily investigating.

Bad things can happen, there is usually an explanation, and some choose to avoid certain things...like parking a MINI in their garage. I can understand, especially if a MINI has caught fire on them before, but I can certainly understand those who choose not to worry about such a small risk. I for one would have no reservations parking mine in a garage, but then I haven't had one burn up on me. I would like to know what the issue was if it does ever get discovered though.
Ahem... Cars burn up.
Houses burn down.
Seriously though, I'm glad everyone's alright.

So, what was the result of the investigation? What caused the fire?

Hmmmmmmmmm....
Why do you say that cars burn up & houses burn down? Not to be picky but I would think they just "burn". Although I did see a house on fire once, close by too, and after the fire the inside was gone, but the house remained intact.

That would be partially burned, not burned down.

Another interesting fact:

Boats don't burn up or down, boats burn to the waterline.

But their fuel burns off.

I tell you, I'm a little hesitant to drive around with the kiddos in the back of the MCS.

And finally, I don't think http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3157/...3c2481905d.jpg that's going to buff out.

And eventually, people burn out.

Still no news on why the car burned?

My 07' MINI R.I.P.

Hey guys

Sorry i haven't posted an update in a while, I've been very busy. So I heard back from my insurance company after about a month of them inspecting the car at their total loss unit and guess what they told me.... they have no idea why my MINI caught on fire and burned up in minutes with my friend almost trapped inside it. Comforting huh?

To add insult to injury they want to send me a check for a whopping $200.00 for all the items lost in the car, which is a joke considering what my friend lost, I actually asked them if they were serious or if that was just a figure quoted for the iPod in my glove.... you know... perhaps they were quoting on an itemized basis...

Needless to say I was less than thrilled with their level of service...

But there is some good news, a few weeks ago I called my salesperson at MINI of Manhattan and ordered a new 2008 R56 and they were more than accommodating. The car was finished in just under four weeks and delivered to the dealership and I am going to pick it up today. Ah... to be mobile again.

So it's like Christmas. I'm seven years old again, up early, bright eyed and full of wonder, waiting for the call, ready to get over to the city and pick up my new baby, cant wait....

Will post again later when I've stopped smiling.

Thanks for letting us know. I've been wondering what caused it. I guess there must have been some fault in that MINI.

Congrats on the new MINI.

Any car can have a fire, but turbo'ed cars are at considerably higher risk because any fuel leak that sprays fuel on the turbo housing will flash to flame. On a non-turbo, nothing generally gets hot enough to ignite gas so there has to be some other ignition source, typically an electrical system malfunction.

I saw a new mercedes burned to a crisp yesterday . A car fire can happen to any brand and does buit not so often that the term " epidimic " should eb applied. The fact that a couple of r-56's have had the problem should not be thought of as a real issue. Quite a few more will have to become a car-b-que to catch up to the total of r-53s that have had issues.

My 08' MINI

Well she's here:

God, I never realized how much I missed this car. The fit and finish on the 08' is almost identical to the 07', with the exception of a few odds and ends the car was exactly as specked.

A word of warning to any perspective 08" owners, I got the USB/Bluetooth comfort package and it was not at all what I was expecting. it is essentially two inputs, a USB port and an audio port in a small, square plastic enclosure on the underside of the center stack mounted to the extreme right above the cubby storage. it comes with a dongle: one side a iPod adapter and the other ends in two separate wires, one USB and one audio. The adapter itself is inconspicuous enough when nothing is plugged in, however, when you do plug the dongle in the wires stick out over the cup holder/astray section, it looks very messy and aftermarket. I was kind of surprised as I thought those days were behind MINI with the new styling of the second generation cars. The response time is a bit sluggish as well compared to the straight iPod adapter. Just a heads up guys.

One of the things that was not installed was the glovebox iPod adapter which I have to bring the car back in for, so my salesperson is going to see if the USB adapter can be mounted in the glove as well. I'm all about aesthetics...

The power-fold side mirrors are cute too, kept me amused for like fifteen minutes...

I'm going to spend some quality time now so we can get to know each other better, will post pix of the USB adapter if anyone is considering it and wants to see what it looks like.

Congrats on the new car!
