Glad all was good for the driver.

Why is the front of the car all bashed up?

Battery is in the front on the R56's. Perhaps an exhaust/fuel situation, they are both kind of in the same area. Or as others have stated it could have been electrical. I kind of doubt that last as the mini seems to yell if a simple light has burned out.

DAAMMNN! Look at the melted right front rim. That was one seriously hot fire.
Glad to hear the driver got out safely.

as for the r53s that burned down, what happened? For the ones that were caused by various component failures, did MINIUSA do anything about it or was it just an insurance claim? i would imagine if MINI dealt with it, you could get yourself a brand new fully loaded cooper.
To make a very LONG story short - you can read all about ours in the threads provided - but NO - MINIUSA DID NOTHING FOR US!!! They WOULD NOT AND STILL HAVE NOT admitted a problem. It was an insurance claim for us as it has been for all of the others burned. We still have an "open" file with the NTSB. They are investigating each person that files something on their web site. I still urge everyone to file something with them.

Yes - partially paid for by our insurance company and the other portion out of pocket. We don't have it anymore - sold to purchase the Clubman we now have.

Empathy

No one was seriously injured or burned. THAT is the most important thing to be thankful for here.
Cars are full of gasoline. Their engines create heat. Modern cars like Minis are incredibly complex vehicles. You build enough of them, something is going to go haywire.
A lot of Porsches and VW air cooleds have gone the same way. Production continued then, and it will continue now. But there should be a thorough investigation into why this is happening.
Speaking of Porsches, where's slag1911? Surely he's going to check in to remind us that not only is the R56 sky falling, but that it is filled with thick black toxic smoke.
Miniusa denying claims on something like this is pretty bad. Let us be collectively thankful for our insurance policies.

It looks like a Cooper, too, which have been pretty rock solid all along. I suspect some odd malfunction or circumstance...not anything chronic. So sorry for the poor owner and very glad they are okay.

Your friend didn't leave her e-brake on, did she?
That's what I was hinting at earlier when I mentioned brakes; it's fairly common when somebody borrows a car. The owner uses the e-brake all the time and the loan-ee doesn't.
Brake fluid and hydraulic fluid isn't very combustible at room temperature; vaporize it and it becomes both volitile and toxic. There were separate NFPA regulations written after tragedies involving that type of fluid...

Those pictures make me feel sad enough to cry. What a blessing that the driver was spared serious injury. Sorry the same couldn't be said for the poor baby MINI.

Better that than to have it burn partially and be stuck with a story car that you can't get rid of. If it's going to burn, let it melt!

Just not in the garage while the family is sleeping...

My condolences go out to the OP... and I'm thankful no one was injured.. and that the fire was out in the open vs. a garage...

That's the scary part. I'll be checking my MINI every night before bed when I get it.

Better have a smoke alarm/detector in your garage. Ours had been sitting for over 3 hours before it burst into flames...

No joke...better link it to the one outside my bedroom door too. There's no way I'm hearing a smoke alarm in the garage at night.

I'll never sleep again...

Well thats just a pleasant thought.......
The Cooper is so safe on the road during crashes however it turns into a BBQ'r and tries to crispify the drivers. I think my next mod will be a fire extinguisher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

I'll get flamed for this (bad choice of words I know), but after that incident, we never parked our replacement MINI in the garage or the current one we have either.... We still have a bit of a "trust" issue you could say...
