Bigger Wheels In Sports Package

Does the fact that the "sports package" come with large wheels imply that larger wheels == better handling? Does a mini S with 17 inch wheels grip better than one with 16" wheels stock for stock.

The 17" factory wheels for the Sport Package come with 1cm wider tires than the 16" standard wheels (205 vs. 195). I've heard some debate as to whether this actually improves more grip or not.

The most noticeable difference will be the harshness of the ride. The tire O.D. is about the same whether you have 16" or 17 wheels. So, the 16" wheels allow for a taller sidewall. This provides more cushion than on 17" wheels. The advantage of the 17" wheels is that turn-in is quicker and tighter. However, both ride harshness and turn-in can vary from one model tire to another. Runflats are going to give a much harsher ride than non-runflats.

My recommendation is to go for the cheapest factory wheels and then buy decent after-market wheels. I got the Sport Package and ended up selling my Crown Spoke 17" wheels and runflat tires in the NAM marketplace.

I now have two sets of wheels -- 16x7 Rota RB with 205/55-16 Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S tires, and CenterLine RPM 17x7 with Michelin Pilot Exhalto PE2 tires. Both are non-runflat. I carry a tire sealant/compressor, and puncture repair kit in my car.

I believe that you meant 10mm wider.

Oops, right. Changed it to 1 cm.
