8,000 mile Used Oil Analysis

Here is our first UOA at 8K. The OEM oil & filter were replaced at 2K (engine age 1 month) with Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 and run for another 6K miles (engine age 3 months), then sampled for UOA.

Iron 31
Copper 19
Tin 0
Lead 1
Chrom 1
Nickel 1
Alum 41
Titan 0
Silver 0
Cal 2205
Magnes 286
Zinc 978
Phos 882
Barium 0
Moly 126
Antim 0
Silicon 24
Sodium 8
Boron 31
Potass 0
Vanad 0

V40C 55.4
V100C 9.6

TAN 4.3
Flash 305
Oxid 27
Nit 12
KF 788
TBN 3.8
Fuel 1.42

Soot 0
Glycol 0

Vis Idx 160

I'm no tribologist but the elevated Al number stands out. Fe and Cu could be a little lower too. There is some fuel dilution, but it looks like the oil is still within SAE30 spec. Also looking at the TBN and TAN this oil looks pretty much spent so maybe time for a change.

Who did the analysis? If it was blackstone, their TBN and I assume TAN numbers run different than everyone else. Regardless, fuel is high and I assume Pennzoil isn't as thick a 30 weight oil as German Castrol of the Mini/BMW 5w30. I'm kinda glad to see your wear numbers are similar to mine. Yours would likely be higher still without that first change.

Does Penzoil Platinum mean the ACEA A3 spec?
Just looked it up. it meets A5/B5 and viscosity is 10.3 cST at 100C.

Also, you should consider posting your data to bobistheoilguy.com. I linked here in the thread on my oil analysis.

Done by Dyson Analysis. I was kind of surprised the Al was so elevated, I guess the engine is still breaking in. Either that or something is wearing away (pistons?). Unless the OEM Castrol fill is a special formulation, I'm not sure how BMW expects it to last 15K miles. These DI engines are hell on the oil. Think I'm going to change out the oil & filter now and then bring it in for the 15K service in a few months when it hits 15K.
