I drive an automatic '07 MC, and am almost ashamed to say I'm averaging 34-35 mpg with mixed driving. I suppose one could say I drive a little less conservatively, though I rarely use the sport button. My partner drives an '08 manual MC and he averaged 39 mpg on a romp through the mountains last weekend. I'll try a few tests and see where I can top out.

It's my understanding that automatic always have lower mpg...but i could EASILY be wrong!

Anyone out there go from a 1st-gen MC to a 2nd-Gen? Performance differences?

Autos do have lower average mpg ratings than manuals. I believe the window sticker on the lot says 37 mpg on autos and 40 mpg on manuals. Or they did in '07, but with the new fuel economy rating I think both scores went down around 3 or 4 mpg.

On my new 2007 MCSa I am averaging currently 28 (city/hwy combined) with 2 adults and 2 kids. I am Italian and drive as such so that does not help the mileage, but beats the 12 I was getting my other car My MCSa is my daily driver and lately I have been taking the LONG way home from work to have more driving time

Cheers,
Roberto

My '07 MCS Manual is my only car - we go everywhere together. I drive about 20 miles to work (then back) every day. Depending on the day it's either backroads with quite a few stopsigns between the 55-60mph, or the highway, which is usually a parking lot half the way. I always have 'sport' on, and I don't have a light foot, but I do try to behave.

I average 32-34mpg combined, all that said. I'm glad I got the S, as I'm sure a MC would be great for daily commuting, but I LOVE being able to blow around the twisties away from a stop sign when traffic permits.

BUT, recently I've been drawn to the new models more and more...I'm thinking about getting a bare-bones 2008-09 MCS to replace, since the gas consumption seems to be 'about' as good as my '06's is.

Here's my question: All of you out there with a MCS, how many of you use it as your daily driver and if you are ABLE to drive it conservatively, what mpg do you average on the highway? And what is your cruising speed?

I know what they 'claim' the MCS to get...but what are the REAL numbers?

ps: i attempted to search this, so i hope this hasn't already been discussed...
I drive my MCS daily to work about 30 miles each way. I average about 30 to 31 mpg, I do about 50% freeway and 50% local driving. If I did mostly freeway then I probably would get more like 33mpg or better.

I noticed that on some flat roads, doing about 50mph in 6th gear i get about almost 50mpg on the OBC, when I am going constant 50 ~ 55mph in 6th gear.

I hate to go off-topic but yes, I have an '03 Cooper and an '07 Cooper....both manuals. Yes, there are pronounced differences between the two. I used to have to blip the throttle a bit at launch on my '03 Cooper, but not on my '07...there's much more torque available at low rpms. Really, it's great. The kick in torque you get at 4K rpms on an earlier Cooper now happens at 3K on an '07...but it comes on smoother. Now, add to that the fact that the '07 has 6-gears instead of 5 gears...w/ lower revs, highway mpg shoots way up into the 40s mpg, while, since the engine is more efficient in general, city mph can easily exceed 35 mpg. Sport mode just offers a different feel for throttle response and steering, it does not make the basic car faster, although in sport mode I have smoother, more direct launches, but I think that's just because my foot is better calibrated to the more linear throttle offered in sport mode. Hope that helps. The MC is also a superb daily driver.

I cannot seem to get over 28mpg on my MCSa. I don't know if I have a heavy foot, or what. Maybe it's just colder up here in Canada, or maybe all our fuels have ethanol in them? I behave for a full tank and not get an increase in mileage so I go nuts for the next tank and get the same. Maybe I need to read an article or two on how to drive to conserve...

ahhh... Auto trans and sport button do not mix well. It keeps the car in a lower gear.

Il Buono is our primary car, if it is available, it is the one driven. If I am gone, my sweetie takes her Jetta. My commute is 35 miles each way, less than a 1/4 mile off the freeway at beginning and end. I already have my first ticket in the car, but I only have one. I average between 29.5-33.5 with mixed driving. If I am running a long distance on the freeway, it is easy to get it past 37 by being sane.

I have to agree that in retrospect, the efficiency of the MC is pretty darn attractive. Plus, I doubt I would be surprised at my rate of travel as often as I am now. But, if Ohio is anything like D/FW, the ability to leave the pickup truck behind can never be overrated. If you can do without the couple of thousand that the S model costs, and the roughly 1/6th worse mileage, I'd get the MCS.

(Off-topic? I was just continuing the thread I had started...should I have started a new thread instead?)

Anyways, Wow...it's a shame that Cincinnati MINI is not open 24/7...I think I'd be on my way down,

In all seriousness, not sure how soon I'll be placing my order, depends on a lot!

At this point, I"m thinking the MC is gonna be the answer for me, I really like being able to say I get about 40 mpg and still able to carve up the twisties as well as the 'other cooper' (that and it fits the budget much better )

Not sure if it makes sense to jump out of an 06 MC into a new one just for performance and fuel efficiency reasons. If you don't want to go for the R56 might as well just hang onto your car and trade up in a couple years. Certainly doesn't make financial sense, even with the good resale you still loose a chunk of money switching cars.

Yea, as much as I'd LOVE the 6-spd AND the performance boost...I'm thinking I'll just hang on to the ol' '06 and mod her up some!
