I dunt(tm) think it is MC ve MCS. It seems there are some MCS folks who have some type of bizarre disdain towards the MC. I really cannot figure out why. It's not like they have been forced to buy something they did not want. They got an MCS. Why waste time and energy putting down the MC? Makes no sense at all. I really do not get it.

I like the MCs, but is is not the car for me. The MC fits the parameters of my purchase perfectly.

these "discussions" go on ad nauseam on every message board- 997 vs 997S( there is a thread on Rennlist about this long running right now) c6 Corvette vs Z06...blah blah.

They are all great cars. Different strokes for different folks. I had an 04 Cooper, now an 07 MCS. The 04 was great, the 07 fits my needs/wants better or I would have kept the 04. Would I ever talk someone out of buying a Cooper because the MCS works better for ME...NO WAY.

To hijack this thread back to its ORIGINAL INTENT...

IF cost is a consideration, the buyer should pick his/her most important option/options...
power, nav or other toys, etc. Passing on one of his/her top priorites will wear thin over time. My Cooper had leather seats but I was totally hooked up on the lounge leather seats when I saw the R56. That was one option I refused to pass on or I would have kept the 04 Cooper.

We should all get along...after all, we are all MINI DRIVERS.

I would like to hear from those who got a MC and now have second thoughts and regret they didn't get a MCS. Why the second thoughts? Also, for those who have had both types, which one would you recommend based on the mileage and type of driving? Thanks for all your help and Happy New Year to everyone.
I have a MC and drove a MCS for over a week when mine was in the shop.

MC

Definitely a fun car. I'm geeting 33 mpg combined MPG and i don't drive it easy. 100 % used for commuting though I do plan on taking it to the track after a buddy told me the record is held by 100hp Miata. He said the turns determine who wins and there may only be minor differences in a MC vs S (with similar suspention and tires brakes) I think the S has larger brakes. The MC corners as good as the S. Addiquite accelration - the S is lets say 3 seconds faster (0-60). I don't think that makes much difference traffic where I spend most of my time. On the track I'm sure it does.

MCS

Definitly a fun car also. I was seeing about 28 MPG combined the week I drove it. I didn't like the torque oversteer but I'm sure I could get use to it.
Definitly a faster accelerating car. For my driving It's not needed. Sure it's fun but there's not only he initial price point adding the turbo, repair will be higher for out of Warr. repairs. 17 inch tires/rims did make it a bit rougher riding but not to the point of being uncomfortable. I didn't feel the larger rims gave it an edge on handling on general street driving. The 16's on the MC now feel much softer.

I really think both the MC and MCS are great cars.

I bought the MC because in the long run it's more econimical (lower cost/better milege). For me it's just as fun as a MCS (3 seconds faster isn't a big difference in my driving) and I like the auto trans for bumper to bumper modes and when needed press the sport button swing the shift to the left and it become a complety different driving experience. The sport button didn't seem to do much on the S or maybe is just much more noticable on the MC since it changes shift points. Oh and I not going to be pouring $1000's of dollars into getting a few more horsepower.

I'm still finding excueses to just get in it and drive.

Hmmm.. darn I forgot bread... guess Ill go to the other side of town for that!

I'm with Skuzzy on this, and emtrey too. You never see Cooper owners telling Cooper S owners that they made a big mistake spending $3K more for 50 horses that mainly make a difference in the straights and on the track. But every time one of these threads begins, usually with some innocent person who is on the bubble before a purchase, some Cooper S owners feel it's necessary to put down the Cooper. And those people can drag us all down.

We all buy what we want or can afford. I could afford the S when I bought my Cooper but I liked it so much that I didn't see the worth in spending $3K more.

The facts are the facts. The S is faster and you can easily make it a lot faster. We all know this. The Cooper is quick and nimble with plenty of power for it's size. A MINI is a MINI is mini...

We now return to our regulary scheduled programming.

I like to consider myself an environmentally minded person, and when I started shopping for cars a few months ago, I was only considering ones that average into the mid 30's fuel economy. That ruled out every fun ride but one: MINI. We even test drove a Prius just to see how they were. This was right after we test drove a used '05 Cooper. The Prius had lots of gadgets and was very impressive technologically, but I swear I could put the pedal to the metal, as they say, and the car just eased ahead in speed. It was very sluggish and clunky. So for me, there was no comparison. I had been considering VW's before this, but none of them could reach the fuel economy I wanted. The Yaris was...well, a Yaris. So the weekend after we test drove the Prius, we went to Roadshow MINI/BMW in Memphis and I picked out Nicodemus. I could've afforded an S had I really wanted one, but it would've defeated the purpose in my buying a MINI.

Is my MC a slouch in the performance dept? Heck no! He'll get up and go any time I ask, and do so a lot more spiritedly than most other cars on the road. But do I have to have this performance at the cost of 17 mpg? Nope. That's only one of the many the beauties of the MINI - fun, fast, and environmentally friendly. Not to mention one of the cutest (yes they are cute!), most unique cars on the road. I see so many Toyotas and junk on the road now, I almost feel bad for them and their conformation machines. Now there's something we should all be able to agree upon! MINI Means individuality at its best.

Rant done. Thanks for reading.

you mean to tell me that people buy a MINI not knowing the difference? did you test drive the S? it only took me one test drive to decide on the S.

If you are stuck on the S now, you should just bite the bullet and trade in what you got. Get the S... you only live once

Yeah, but the video was from my dad's 2006 Mini Cooper. I was just trying to illustrate that the base Cooper isn't just a fun canyon carver, but actually has decent acceleration as well (hence the video).

When I comes to cars my motto is 'Go for the biggest engine I can afford'. It had to be a MINI and they are both 1.6L so I had to go for the turbo 1.6L.

Hah, I completely forgot about this thread. Funny that maybe 8 days after posting what I did, I turned around and did what bmbleB07 recommended! He is right though - you only live once and really should enjoy it as much as possible.

I have a MC.....prior to making the purchase I drove both cars and could not tell the difference between the two in normal round town driving (the sales person was with me and I had to resist the urge to floor the thing). My MC came with the MCS seats and suspension, so it looked and felt the same as the MCS from a normal driving perspective. I believe that in the long run the MC will be more reliable (less moving parts) and less prone to failure, also a lower cost of ownership. If you are not into roofs get a hard top, less problems. The MCS has more brut force power than does the MC, but again if you are not into that you would be happy with the MC. Good luck.

Oh trust me I wanted an S so bad but with the fiance needing an auto, I almost thought getting an S auto was a waste. Then after talking with my salesman, he mentioned that the Cooper leased better than the Cooper S so since I was in a leasing position I went with a Cooper. I may regret it however if I get an S, it will be purchased so I can mod the hell out of it.

COOPER S all the way!!! The reason for this is that you get many options from the cooper as standard on the cooper plus the new R56 have a great mpg and is a lot more fun to drive in my opinion.

Where are you getting the 17 mpg difference? Compared to the Prius? Surely not to an MCS. I'm getting nearly identical mileage from my 09 MCS as compared to a 07 MC. I personally went to a MCS because I thought the MC was a bit sluggish after a few weeks of driving a MCS. Guess I a "test drive" of the S was not long enough for me to be convinced I wanted the HP. Also after an engine replacement and two transmissions I was not going to get the same MC engine again. My thoughts have changed. I thought the MC would be more reliable than the MCS but it didn't prove that way. Only time will tell with the MCS now.

Less moving parts? Hmmm, My MC had an engine and 2 transmissions replaced. So far the MCS has yet to be repaired. So much for that theory...

About 5% of the time I really wish I had more power on the highways. Funny thing is I've never had or wanted "fast" car before, but owning a mini made me kinda mod crazy and wanting more. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the chrome grilled/non scooped hood classic look of my pure silver MC. If I could afford to do it over, though, I would get a bare-boned stock MCS with a MC grille face-lift.

I've got a serious hankerin' for an MCS JCW; however, until BMW identifies an unambiguous root cause and a cure for the dreaded cold start engine clatter -- I have absolutely no regrets. Despite the claims that it's "normal" and "an acoustic issue only" and "my old Subaru did this too" I just can't take that risk for the level of investment required.

Sorry BMW. Someday you'll wake up and realize that your inattentiveness to quality engineering is costing you customers.

My 2008 I bough in September with 9000 miles has no cold start issues.... is it really as wide spread as people make it seem? I was really worried when I got mine, but it started up fine and it was 26 degrees yestermorning.

Not sure what kind of mileage you're getting but my MCS in an automatic nonetheless was getting 39 mpg on the highway with the cruise on at 75.

Now that I've installed a JCW stage I kit on it, even running at 75-80 over a 700 mile ride, I can easily get 30-34mpg depending on how much time I stay in the triple digits.

Even with a full tank of gas, completely loaded down with luggage and 4 people in the car, the worst I ever got was 28mpg.

So unless you're getting around 50-55 mpg, I'll stick with an MCS.

Really? Allow me to point you to the right post (ssssss)

Obviously with 17 pages of complaints, there are people with "issues".

I'm glad you're not having any but I've got some on mine... (sunroof, melting hoodscoop and startup noise)
