Strange Wiring Effect

Last Spring I had a car audio place hard wire my Valentine One while they were installing something else. Yesterday, I discovered something weird: When I turned on my rear window defogger, the detector turned off. When I turned the defogger off, the detector went back on. It went through the entire boot-up sequence, so I am confident it actually was de-powered as opposed to experiencing any kind of rf interference. Any ideas? Is there a relay that cuts power to some circuit when the rear defogger is turned on?

It looks like you will have to find another power source for your detector or live with this condition. Most R56 circuits are monitored electronically for overcurrent conditions, apparently they tapped into the wrong circuit.

I figured it was that, since the rear defogger draws huge current.... But, unless it is relayed, it couldn't just be wired to the rear defogger circuit because if power was cut due to overload, it would be cut to the defogger as well as the detector. In this case, the defogger comes on, the detector goes off. Shut off the defogger and the detector comes back on.

Maybe the ground for the V1 is to the rear defog; low enough resistance to be a pretty good ground, but no use at all when a supply is sent to it.
