R56 Rattles For Sale
These aren't just ordinary rattles. These rattles are surrounded by a 6 month old MINI. But they sound like they come from a rusted out 1972 Chevy Vega. These are magical rattles, too. Only the dealer isn't able to hear them. Plus, some of the rattles morph into continuous buzzes if the "Hifi" is on (and it usually is, since it is needed to drown out the rattles). Anyone interested? If you buy these unique rattles, I'll throw in the MINI for free. It's the ideal car, if you are deaf. It has more rattles than Babies R Us and the "Hifi" sounds like a $14 clock radio.
I'm now on my seventh MINI - my previous R56 had a few rattles in it but nothing too major in over 11,000 miles.
The replacement R56 (week 32 build) seems to be a lot more solid. Lynn, I'd suggest taking your car to Towson or Sterling if you're having rattle issues. They should be able to resolve the majority of them.
Things you can do on your end obviously is make sure you've got everything out of the bins, glovebox, and hatch and then test away. The more specific information you can give an engineer (it's buzzing from the upper right dash area at 50 mph) will be helpful to the techs.
A sidebar - I was talking to a friend of mine and his dad used to be driven insane by rattles in his Chrysler (he was an engineer for Chrysler). My friend said his dad would have a car full of matchsticks between panels in order to stop the rattles.
Olsbear, wash the door gaskets with some warm soapy water and dry them. That will help reduce stiction which causes the glass to jump over the rubber surface.
I have applied some Black Wow to the door gaskets and after a couple of applications the stiction issue is completely gone. Lasts for about 6 weeks. The trick in using it is to dry the gaskets out very well after the application. It also helps the gaskets remain pliable.

My Madza Proteges never rattled like this. I know the location of the rattles. The sunroof trim ring is obvious, at least. As to my being unhappy with my MINI, it's much like with my step-daughter. Most of the time, she is a pain in the ***, but just when I'm about to give up, she does something nice. As for the Dealer is MoS -- they suck. I have gotten the car back, with all rattles in tact. On the receipt, they didn't say they didn't hear the rattles (as they told me on the phone), but wrote they heard "no unusual sounds." Duh.... Of course they aren't unusual. They happen all the time.
Motor On - I'm not giving the rattles away; I'm selling them and throwing in the car. Haven't decided how much yet.

They did the dash, too when I had to replace my windshield. Some type of felt bumpers in the dash centered up front. No more buzzy dash, either.
Picked up the car and, of course, the rattles were immediately evident before I even left the dealer's lot. MINI of Sterling service sucks. Period. Doesn't seem to concern them that I'm a NAM and DCMMC member. Shows what lack of competition does. While I was told on the phone that they don't hear the rattles, on the receipt, it says "No unusual noises heard." Well, that's probably true, since the build "quality" of these cars suck. I'll file that along with my letter from GM informing me that "the condition you experienced [a blown engine on my Vega with 32,000 miles on it] with your 1972 Vega is not considered unusual," and never own another one of these pieces of crap again.
I have to agree with you, if my MINI was squeaking & rattling I'd be pretty upset too. Enough to sell the rattles & other noises, well I don't know. Your call.
IMO the dealers send their tech people to school to learn how to say "oh sir that is perfectly normal" & " no, we heard no noises" with a straight face. I asked a Subaru service manger that once & he sheepishly nodded.
Your case is one of the reasons I won't buy a car until it's been in production for a while.
They have to get the bugs ironed out. NVH are bugs, they bug the carp out of ya. That being said a new car shouldn't have those problems. My advice would be to try another dealer. Complain to MINI about your problem & the dealer with deaf techs.
My wifes advice to me when I complained about these issues on my Subaru......"Honey turn the radio up & turn down your hearing aides."
Good luck with your MINI. A good tech will know how to silence them.
Now all you have to do is find that good tech.

Hi
Lynn are you really selling your Mini? I am thinking of selling mine. My other car is a 2 year old Exterra. I would have never bought a Mini without having another car. I can't complain too much, but I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling about how long the Mini will last. I bought mine on a total impulse. The bad thing is that the dealers are so far away.
I am sure that in a few minutes I could locate and repair the rattles. Well, the sunroof trim ring is obvious. Door panels shouldn't be too hard either. But, it's the point. I have a warranty. And I don't like dealers who just can't be bothered. As an update, I sent an e-mail to Mini of Sterling and have not as yet even received an acknowledgement.
You should bring your mini down to Crown Mini in Richmond. I have had nothing but excellent service with them. Clay the Mini Service manager is young and acutually listens to what you have wrong. I know it's a hike down here, but the weather is nice and it might be worth it if you love your mini otherwise
mine rattles too.. 4 months old. the center console above, screen for the sunroof, and the dash rattles. They put felt tape on the center console which helped for a little bit but the noise came back.
i just gave up on it.

'06 Cooper, just turned 30K mi. no rattles. Got to admit that all the stories about Mini rattles had me "rattled" when I was trying to decide on whether to buy. Only sound I get is where the aftermarket tinted windows meet the seals, and then mostly when its cold. If I condition the window seals, it seems to go away. Nothing I'd call a real "rattle" though
I'm going to have to take mine in for this solution -- the rattle/squeak noise (coming from piece under the steering wheel) is driving me nuts!

Were they fitted between the dash and windscreen?
