RFI / Turbo wind down after engine turned off?

Once again, did a search - no luck finding an answer.

Rumor control has it that it's a good idea to let a turbo-powered car idle down for a couple minutes after a drive. The purpose is supposedly to allow the turbo to spool down, so it won't bake after the engine is turned off.

I know that to be true in some diesel powered trucks, but I've never read or heard anything related to similar procedures with the Mini. And, for what it's worth, my sales guru didn't mention anything about letting it idle down during my delivery...

An old wive's tale, perhaps?...

that is why your fans continue to run after shut off...no need to do anything more.

There have been posts that I've read about this and from what I remember reading the Minis have a built in system that will keep cooling the turbo after its shut off. Supposedly there isn't a need for a cooler but I suppose that would depend on your own opinion and comfort level.

When turbo-equipped cars first came out, they recommended idling the car for a minute to allow the turbo to cool so it doesnt bake the oil that gets trapped when the oil pump stops. This was an early design problem. All modern turbo-equipped cars no longer have this problem since they have systems that keep the oil from being trapped in a high-heat environment.

The R56 uses an auxillary water pump (electric) to continue to circulate water through the turbo after you shut the car off. MINI's turbo is both water AND oil cooled, but it can't pump oil after shutoff as that's a mechanical pump driven by the engine's movement.
