I thought the extended warranty not the included maintenance was already at 100K. The current base warranty is 50K and I thought it doubles with the warranty.

I sold my Prius to buy my R56 S. While I had that car I learned through the Prius forum that the price for the Toyota Platinum 100,000 mile warranty varies from dealer to dealer. My dealer offered it for $2,200. A dealer back east who I learned about on the Prius forum sold the same warranty for $960. He sold a lot of extended warranties to us forum folks. It might be interesting to compare prices here. Maybe the same thing could happen.

Although I never used that extended warranty it was a big factor when I went to sell my car. Nothing more comforting for a prospective buyer than to know that the used car they're thinking about purchasing is covered by a full extended warranty. I sold my car for thousands of dollars more than I was offered for a trade-in price. Oh, and for what it's worth, I learned that if you trade in your car or sell it to Carmax, they could care less about an extended warranty.

This thread is criss crossing with two VERY different issues many people are talking about "extended warrenty" others are talking about "extending the matinence plan" my questions go to the matinence plan which I beleive is only sold by MINI itself.
1. What does it cover? brakes? Battery? Alignment? Tire rotation? fuel filter? state inspection? air filter? belts and hoses?
I ask because when I picked up my car in FEB my MA seemed very vague, for example the owners manuel states that tire rotation should be done, but the MA states this is not covered wnder the matinence program, so what else isn't covered?

2. Am I pretty much guaranteed needing brakes by 50K I drive 1/2 city and 1/2 highway, I'm no lead foot, and I don't beat on the car?

At least some extended warranties are refundable if you terminate them before the end of the term. You should look into a refund if you don't transfer the warranty. My wife got a substantial refund when she traded in a car a couple of years ago. Takes some persistence and some time, but she got it!

No experience with the MINI (yet!), but most vehicles require new pads and having the front rotors turned or replaced by about 45k or so. The rears generally last longer. This is a fairly easy job and I have done it a number of times on my own cars. It shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred bucks from an independent brake shop. Maybe $100 if you do it yourself and depending on what's needed. I saw someone quote $900 from the dealer, but that may have included more work than I'm talking about.

Your mileage may vary!!

The maintenance plan would cover anything that is regularly scheduled maintenance. I think there are some maintenance intervals around 60 and 90 k that I've heard are rather pricey. I don't have my R56 yet so I can't tell you if those mileage points are accurate or what maintenance is required at that point.

Just bought my car and I went with the extended maintenance 100K/6 years for around $1800. They told me it includes the 90 K timing belts, which nearly pays for itself right there.

Timing Belt?!? Please, don't tell me that MINI cheaped out and didn't use a timing chain.

[edit]

And in response to the OP, yes, I did get the extended warranty, as well as the extended service plan, but I am not sure it will pay off. I have already put 13,000 miles on the car, and I have only had it since April, but the 1st service keeps moving away from my current mileage. It currently states that I have to drive another 8000 miles and/or wait until 1/2009 to get an oil change. HAHAHA! No way, I went ahead and have changed the oil twice so far on my own. (Fairly cheap)

I will be taking advantage of the 1-a-year oil change from MINI, but I still have to wait til April of next year. I am guessing that I will change the oil a couple more times before that. At this rate, I think I will get 1, maybe 2, oil changes for the dough I spent on that useless extended service plan. Not sure what else is covered under the plan, but I will be studying it as the miles rack up.

Good luck!

If you put plan on putting a lot of miles on your MINI, yes the plan is worth it. If you will not be keeping it for an extended period of time and/or you will not be putting a lot of miles on it, then no, it isn't worth it.

We put more miles on my R56 than what we do on my wife's R53. I'll be getting the extended warranty and extended maintenance on my R56 and we'll just get the extended warranty on her R53.

I bought the Extended maintenance (Platinum for 6 years/ 100K) for about 2K. I did this because I expect to put a lot of miles on her in a short time. My commute is 3-4 days /wk @ 160 Mi. Round trip. It was worth it to me. Covers all the maintenance like the original warranty. There is no deductible. The Extended Warranty had a $100 co-pay. That I didn't go for.

In Littleton, Ralph Schomp MINI offers the 100k/6yr Maintenance extension for $1395.00 at the time of purchase, or for $1595 if you wait until your original 36k/3yr warranty is up.

We also have the option to get a Extended Warranty Offered by GE for 100k/7yr for ($50 deductable) on new cars:
MCS: $2554.00
MC: $2358.00
Those two warranties are *fully refundable* if no claims are made on them after 100k/7yr.

I know I'm not going to take the $200 rebate on the Maintenance extension by purchasing it now (but likely will pay for it in a few years, assuming taking my MCS to the shop isn't too painful -- it's just over an hour away if there's no traffic), and I'm very much debating the Extended Warranty Offered by GE. I only have a few weeks left to make my decision.

Schomp also offers a Multi-Shield 5yr plan for $650 that covers Minor dent & door ding protection, windshield repair, tire & wheel coverage, plus roadside assistance. I'll have to hear the details again, but with the numbers of cracked windshields in the local area (MINIs and otherwise) and with the peace of mind potentially offered by roadside assistance (I intend to take off my run-flats once we get back to the warm/dry season), I think this one is a no-brainer. Door dings and wheel protection seem like a bonus to me.

The other upsale warranties and maintenance don't interest me.

I just got my extended warranty and maintainance for total of $3996 from Nick Alexander Imports in Los Angeles, California. Here is the deal:

extended maintainance: extended to 7yrs/100K from the date of purchase of your car.
I purchased another extended maintainance/warranty package 1 year ago and extended to 4yrs/50K. If you got that and still within the maintainance/warranty, the price is $1595. If you got that but your maintainance/warranty expired, the price is $1795.

extended warranty: top platinum coverage (exclusive policy, the best option on market) extend to 4yrs/100K from the date of purchase of the warranty with $200 deductable.
The warranty part is through a third party. Each dealer works with different company. Nick Alexander offers GE & Millenium. Millenium is generally cheaper and has less restrictions. The coverage I got costed me $2501.

Since I puchased both, they reduced the total price by $100. I ended up paying $3996. The best deal I got after months of research and phones call to almost all dealers in California. Call Sally at Nick Alexander Imports. Here is her number 323.583.1901x152. She is extremely nice. Since I can't be there physically, I simply mailed my key out to her and we did all transactions via fax. One caveat though, she did mention this price may change starting 1/1/2008. But it doesn't hurt to give a try. If you are lucky to see my post by the year end, you may also lock in the rate I got. Good luck!
