Starting/turning off the engine

Let me preface this thread by saying I'm really not trying to sound like an idiot. I went from a 1992 Toyota Camry to my MCS, so technology has changed in the last 15 years. I just don't want to break the car, if you know what I mean

I have comfort access, but I don't necessarily think that with the questions I have to ask it makes a difference.

1. Is it okay that I hear a fan noise after the car turns off?
2. Do I have to press on the foot brake and the button at the same time to turn off the car, or is putting it in park and putting on the parking brake enough? Vise versa for turning it on, too.

By the way, I did read the Owners Manual and was still confused. I honestly think that it's the fan that's throwing me off, because if I do what the manual says, I hear the fan and think the car is still on somehow.

Okay, you can stop laughing now

These new-fangled engines often cool themselves after they are shut off.

I just push the start/stop button, get out of the car, lock the doors by pressing the little black button on the door handle. That shuts everything down (except the cooling, which is not ours to control).

The manual is a little short on explanation.

Oh, you said stop. Sorry.

The MCS is a turbo engine and many modern turbos have an oil cooling system that continues to run for a few minutes after you turn off your car. This helps to preserve the life of your turbo which gets EXTREMELY hot

Mini--don't feel bad about the questions (and congratulations on your new baby!). The first '07 I drove was a loaner with the comfort system. I pressed the stop button and walked away. The fan was still running though, so I went back out to check on it. Sure enough, I had left the engine running! Fortunately the garage door was still open, or it could have been pretty bad with our attached garage...

Thanks for the tips thus far. Now that I know that the fan noise is normal, tomorrow I'll try to turn the car on/off without pressing on the foot brake and see what happens.

Oh good, daffodildeb, it's nice to know I'm not crazy.

The fan runs after you turn off the MC as well. It's not just the turbocharged MCS's. MINIMademoiselle, you HAVE to have your foot on the brake to start the engine, but don't put your foot on the brake when you turn it off.

Yes The cooling fan also runs for a while on the MC. This is to assure that the Aluminum engine cools down gradually and no hotspots remain which could cause distorsion/ ultimate leaks in the long run. A smart engineering design for BMW/ Pugeot.

Rennie, you gave me the exact answer I wanted. Straight to the point.

Sorry about the double post. My computer never showed me that it transmitted the post, so I just kept hittting "Submit Reply." In truth, there should have been about ten posts
