Spare tire option

I'm not a huge fan of run-flat tires so when I replaced my tires recently I got regular tires and now have them on the car. At the same time I went to the junkyard and picked up a Mini doughnut spare tire in case I get a flat.

When I wanted to put it in the car I found that big huge foam thing that holds the tools and other stuff in the spot. Is there a similar setup for the R55 or was that always a run flat setup? If I know it exists I'll continue to search for it but if the foam insert that holds a tire and the tie-down system doesn't exist I'll stop looking.

anyone?

Yup

You need this, from Way Motor Works

Also, this, but you may be able to source this from another source. I'll bet it's the same part used in some BMWs.

I have the entire set up in my 2008 Clubman S. It's a must have, in my opinion.

LeftField6: Thanks for that. Do you know if that was something that was offered in any of the Mini models or is it something that those guys created just for people like us?

If there's a chance that I can get the whole setup at a junkyard I'll look for a while. If not then I'll have to shell out the bucks to get one from Way Motor Works.

@WayMotorWorks can answer that questions way better than I, and they are a sponsor here on the site.

The foam insert is grossly overpriced but it is nice to have. The $38 for the hold down **** and stud is downright criminal IMO. I bought a socket head bolt (I believe it is M8?) and a large washer to secure my spare.

I can see the foam insert price if they had to buy the injection mold tool to make it, those are not cheap and they have to amortize that cost over every unit. Teh reproductive cost on those is probably never zero.

you are right on the hold down. I think the one from my Saab will fit since it has the same thread.

Pretty sure they are just reselling the OEm BMW item. And I’ve never seen a cheap BMW part

Regardless, almost all parts are overpriced if you just think of the raw materials involved. The $100 Michelin on my car probably has less than $5 worth of raw materials. The foam insert was worth it to me because of the job it does. It fits perfectly, it has niches for all the right tools and parts. I think of it as I spent $$ not to ever hear my jack bang or tow hook clink when I take a corner or hit a bump.
