I purchased a spoiler off of a 2011 R55S. The spoiler bolts on through the roof with two bolts on either side. I'm planning on installing on my 2013 R55S.
The spoiler is OEM Mini.
Has anyone had any experience with the installation?
I actually need to replace the rear spoiler on my Clubman as well, as it's splitting along the seam.
First things first, make sure you know whether your spoiler was a factory installed option, or a dealer installed add-on. From what I have read, if the spoiler was a factory option, it has the bolts like your photo, and actually bolts to the roof of the car. If the spoiler was a dealer installed option, it's stuck onto the car with adhesive. So you just want to make sure you have the right spoiler...bolt on vs. stick on.
To replace a factory installed spoiler (bolt on), it's going to be a difficult/involved install. You're going to have to remove interior panels, the headliner, etc. to get at the roof from the inside of the car...so you can loose the nuts/bolts and remove the old wing, then install the new wing and tighten the nuts/bolts to secure it.
I'm pretty adept at repairs/maintenance on my MINI...but this is one I'm probably going to leave to my dealer. That, and I am pushing for mine to be replaced under warranty.
My spoiler is a factory installed one (bolt on) removed from a 2011 R55S.
I know that I have to remove the headliner. Not sure what's under it?
I'll have to drill the (4) large holes in the roof (.890 dia) and (4) smaller holes (.257 dia) in the panel under the headliner (assuming there is one?
Was hoping to find a template or talk to someone who has done the install. By the number of replies I've received I'm not sure anyone has ever done the installation?
Well, I finally go brave enough to take part of the headliner down last night. Just wanted to find out what was under the corners to mount the spoiler. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be.
Tools: plastic body tools, automotive dental tools. Torx driver set.
1.) On the C & D pillars (rear), under the "Airbag" plastic caps are T20 screws that hold the pillar plastic covers. Removed both of them.
2.) In the rear center is a compression clip. It just pops out.
3.) On the sides are the hand holds. Just pry up the hinged covers that hide the screws.
4.) Removed the next set of plastic covers by the DS door and small door.
5.) Remove the plastic border trim for the rear sun roof. It just pulls down.
6.) Remove the rubber around the boot doors. I only remover what I needed to. What a mess! They put some kind of black adhesive goo on it.
The headliner just pulls down. Be careful not to bend it too much.
Found what I was looking for! There are reinforcement bars for mounting the spoiler to. They have two slotted holes on each corner. I will use the slots to drill the pilot holes for the spoiler. Now I have to get everything ready to start the installation.
The first pic is looking from inside the car at the welded in braces from the factory. There are two slotted holes which I used as a template to drill through the roof. I used a drill that was the same size as the on in the hole saw.
The second pic shows the 1" holes from the top of the roof. I put a few pieces of masking tape over the smaller holes prior to drilling. I then cleaned up the 1" holes and painted them.
The third pic shows the underside of the spoiler with the expansion screws installed. The screws have a square end that gets installed in the spoiler boss (keeps them from turning when installing the flanged nuts inside the car. I also installed some silicone around the outside of the spoiler on each side.
Last was the headliner installation. It was pretty straight forward except for the rear view mirror (tricky). All screws were T20 except for the sun visors which were phillips heads? Be careful not to lose any screws!
Looks like you did a GREAT job on the installation! Really nice looking and subtle spoiler.
I'm interested in one of these myself, but MOSTLY because I am wondering if it disturbs the vacuum behind the back of the car sufficiently to reduce the amount of road grime and dirt that accumulates on the barn doors and rear glass. Have you found it makes any difference in this respect?
