Another Cigarette Lighter question

I have a 2009 Non-S Clubman w/72K that I'm having some problems w/cigarette lighter. I looked, but couldn't find a post with the exact problem that I'm having so here goes.....

The lighter no longer works unless I physically press down on it and hold it. In earlier (happy times) it used to pop back automatically. Last week after doing the "push & hold" routine for about 20 seconds, I pulled the lighter out (and only did this one time, I catch on quickly!) it was very hot, burned my finger (ouch!) Would I be right to assume that its not the fuse?

I don't smoke so I don't need a lighter, but like most, I do use the outlet for my Garmin. The Garmin works just fine when plugged into my neighbors Subaru so don't think its charge cord is at fault (yeah, I know just leave it the Subaru!) and to charge my cell phone (Android, low end LG phone - all I could find were generic chargers for it).

I would appreciate any advice/input on what my next steps should be.
Thanks much~!

Thanks for answering & the link. Would I need to purchase everything that's shown in the diagram? Should I disconnect the battery?

Thanks again!

Sounds like you have a bad lighter socket. For my 2005, it cost under $10.00 in parts and 5 minutes to change.

Thanks Goldsmithy -do you know if there's any You-Tube videos on how to replace this part? The car is going in on Thursday to have the H20 pump replaced, I'd rather do the lighter myself vs. paying the shop to fix this (probably will charge me $25 bucks for the part and at least a half an hour for labor).

Thanks again!

I don't have a video, but it was very easy on my car. I put my finger in the socket, pressed on a side and the socket slid out. The wiring was just two slide on terminals. I then slid the new socket back in place.

Thanks Goldsmithy - took a good look at the socket this a.m and surprise, there what looks like is the remainder of a piece of caramel corn stuck on each side of the socket base. Hmm, not sure how that got there, but it would explain why I cant get the lighter part to work unless I manually push/hold it down. Don't want to try using metal tweezer to try and pull it out, so I'll try the "finger in the socket" method. I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks again!
