My 2009 Clubman S (78k miles) recently started chattering/rattling from a cold start. The weather isnt cold however. During this time it sounds like crap and runs like crap. I checked the oil, and its not low. I'm guessing this is the famous timing chain/belt tensioner issue. I tried to record it. See youtube links below. I think you can hear it over the road noise and in the one just idling.

So a couple questions. 1. Why does it go away after its warmed up. 2. Can the dealer diagnose in a warmed up condition. 3. It appears as if the class action lawsuit was approved. Do you have to be part of the lawsuit to get this replaced for free? or does it apply to all vehicles for the model years in the lawsuit?

 

heeey man...you are killing it...i hope i cought you on time, but you should not drive the car at all until the issue is fixed. at this point the repairs are easy and cheap, if you ended up having the car not starting at all, then you hit the valves. let me know where you stand today with the issue.
