Which VANOS Solenoid is Bank 1?

Just picked up a new VANOS sensor at the local dealership and am getting ready to replace it on my 2008 Clubman. My OBDII is telling me that the one in Bank 1 is bad. Does anyone know which sensor is Bank 1? Intake or Exhaust?

Bank 1 would be the intake. Are you getting a specific code?

The Code said Bank 1 Sensor Timing is retarded. Replaced one of the VANOS sensors and it did not fix. Then swapped another one in and still no fix. I noticed that the top timing guide is broken when I took the valve cover off to change the gasket. I am thinking that maybe there is some slack in the chain causing it to retard? No significant death rattle yet, but a little in the winter.

If the guide is broken , get it replaced asap.
