Good -bye Clubbie hello X-1

Had to do it! Wife wanted the new clubbie, but got tired of waiting. Saw a valencia orange X-1 on line, and that was it. With the new MINI's looking more and more like a BMW why not? Rear wheel drive 240 HP 2.0L turbo engine, ultimate package with all the bells a whistles. Took it on a 3,000 mile vacation right off the lot. Averaged 33.7 MPG. Almost as good as the clubbie, and rides much better. I still have my 2013 JCW Hardtop, and probably always will, as I feel that's the last real MINI!

Congratulations - given the expected wait, wise choice - already proven by experience of trip.
Question, about your '13 JCW Hardtop, which you like so much, should that be any different than a '13 JCW Clubman? Is yours manual ? Is your JCW noisier than your previous Clubman?

What would you say are the main reasons you like your JCW Hardtop so much? Thanks

Essentially, what are main

First off my wife had a 2011 clubman s. She could care less about the JCW option. She had broken her back in an accident in 2005 and has a lot of titanium rods and screws in her back. The clubman was never comfortable to her, so she wanted a more comfortable car, which the X-1 is. Ironically the 0 to 60 times on the X-1 is identical to my JCW at 6.2, even though it weighs about 800# more.

Yes, my JCW is the 6 speed manual. At 67 years young I still enjoy shifting gears, and listening to the rumble of the exhaust. I'm not a big fan of FWD cars, but they're okay in a straight line. My dealer just had a ride and drive event using 2015 hardtops. As I sat in one waiting for my turn at the course I was looking around inside to see what I liked about the 2015 model. It came down to the red toggle switch start/stop. That was it. When they tucked the tach beside the speedo that was the last straw. I se t my cruise using the tach, using pre

calculated rpm's for 65, 70, 75, and 80 mph. Yes, Utah has 80- mph speed limits on all it's interstate highways. Anyway that's my story.

Thank you for your feedback.

It is great that you still enjoy shifting - i do as well. Given your wife's injury, the relative rigors of the Clubman's direct suspension certainly make less sense than a new BMW

For normal around town driving with your JCW, while the exhaust sounds good do find it loud ? Do you remember how it compared to your wife's old Clubman S, noisewise ? keep enjoying your JCW

Congrats. What you gave up in handling and driving fun, you gained in quality and reliability.

Oddly enough I don't think I gave up anything in handling. When you go from FWD to RWD, and from a 60/40 weight distribution, to 50/50 weight distribution I think I may have gained even if the X-1 weighs 800# more. I've driven both my 2013 JCW hardtop and the X-1 down the same twisty roads and I feel the X-1 is more "in" the pavement than the MINI. And to boot the 0 to 60 times on both vehicles is the same at 6.2 seconds. The 2 L N20B20 BMW engine with 17.5 #'s of boost really gets the job done. Just my opinion on all of the above!

Your new X1 is only rear wheel drive? Is an X model now available as non all wheel drive?

Yes, it is. S drive is RWD and X drive is AWD. 2015 is last year for RWD only. 2016 will be FWD. Not sure about the X drive, but pretty sure they have it. I'm new to BMW and not up to speed on all models yet! Love the RWD and 50/50 weight distribution. Handles better than my 2013 JCW hardtop.
