Clubman S 2009 problems .

We have had our clubman S over a year now and the second owners and we are very happy with it. However last service at the dealer we had a yearly service and asked them to check the radio as not working and check the timing chain(heard there was a campaign) Well found out the radio is toast will have to be replaced.(On another thread) Timing chain was not on the list of cars that needed it... Bit confused here and launched into, ....the what if factor and it breaks ... New engine $4000 plus. Long story short.. He then told us the chain and all the parts were changed 2012. First we had heard considering we were give a summery from the dealer when we bought it from a 3rd party what had been done previous to us by them. Well the plot thickens.... Not only was the chain etc, new turbo, new water pump, valve cover,.. All under warranty.
The question is has anyone else experienced this? Seems a lot to be done on a relatively young car.... We had a few things done as well before the warranty ran out. Also concerning the chain tensioner... I'm hoping it was upgraded and not a new original one fitted as this means it's all going to happen again... 2 year warranty I believe??. Waiting for an answer on this from the dealer. And now the radio... Have I got a lemon car that is being fixed???? Time will tell.

So, while I can't speak on your personal car.. here's what I can tell you about the 2007-2010 S model cars.. they have issues... all Minis have issues.. but sadly the turbo cars in those model years have the most issues..

Timing Chain, yes, very much so.. as well as carbon buildup issues on the intake valves.. (which can't be fully prevented).. the other issues such as the turbo.. could have been caused by the past owner running the car on low or poor oil... (absurd factory oil change intervals), as well as an update on the newer cars to keep the oil lines from coking.

The valve cover was resigned on the N14 engines (I believe) to slow/prevent some of the carbon buildup issues... It may have been updated as past of the chain job.

Waterpump failures.. thats a new one.. but thermostat housings.. thats a common leak issue..

I'm sure my car will have issues as well.. I just hope they fixed a few things with the N16 engine... (2011-2014)..

All of those are common problems (sad to say) As far as are they an updated part...Well That remains to be seen.. Just pay close attention to your MINI. Keep a close eye on fluids and keep a good ear to noises that pop up!

Hopefully you have the updated metal water pump. The old turbo probably fried from lack of oil due to a leaking/coked oil feed line (which will fail again, keep an eye on your turbo, and when you see it's 'wet' replace with WMW or Detroit Tuned line), the rest is (as others said) normal... sounds like you really lucked out that someone else went through the hassle of all that work. Hopefully you won't have to do it again. Besides from the turbo line that is...

I also have a 2009 Clubman S, bought it with around 40,000 miles, and I am the second owner. I had the timing chain and tensioner replaced under warranty, and also the valve cover gasket I think. Dual moonroofs would sometimes not open or close when hot (would tilt an inch then return to original position). Hood scoop was slightly warped from turbo heat. Got all that fixed under warranty. Was getting misfires around 51,000 miles, just outside of warranty. Paid around $400 to have intake valves cleaned at a Mini shop using Mini/BMW walnut shell blasting machine (dealership wanted around $700 I think). The valves were really caked up bad. Cleaning added around 10 HP (butt dyno) and better throttle response, but still misfiring. Culprit was the high pressure fuel pump which has a 10 year 120,000 mile warranty. Dealership replaced it at no cost to me and that fixed the misfires. I am just glad everything occurred under warranty (except the intake valve cleaning). Will change oil every 5,000 miles, got the little turbo oil line heat shield installed (free from dealership) and pray nothing else goes wrong. Some people buy extended warranties. Costco has pretty reasonable plans. I do love car but it is a frustrating to have these major failures with less than 60,000 miles on the odometer.
