R55 Tensioner/Timing chain question
Tensioner/Timing chain question
Is the first step in deciding to do a timing chain replacement, measuring the existing tensioner? Other than the "death rattle" is this the most effective way of seeing how far along it is?

Free recall? Not when I had mine replaced. I had to beg to get them to cover half. Only cost me $750. The first thing they do is check how far gone the tensioner issue is which seems to be what TS is referring to. There is a Bulletin out on this. If you're within the tolerance a new bolt is a simple fix. This is what I tried to do with mine (only $50). Unfortunately my used mini already has this done before I bought it. Keep in mind this is really only a temporary fix it seems. Main thing is keep plenty of oil in the engine.
