Turbo shot

54,000 miles and I hear a popping noise when accelerating. Check engine light comes on. Mechanic says turbo is shot
Dealer says 4k over warranty. Sorry
This wont be a fun check to write.

Were you told what caused your turbo to fail?
What year is your car?
Have you keep to the maintenance schedule and gotten oil changes on time, as needed?
Have you always used MINI recommended oil?
Do you have the records to prove it?

Are you aware of this TSB?
Turbocharger Failure - Oil Supply Line Blockage
http://www.minitis.net/tsb/bulletins...p/M110308g.htm

Is your car one of the models listed?

Who at the dealer did you speak with?
You may want to get the General Manager involved.

You may need to contact MINI USA and ask for a goodwill repair or relief.

Just from reading forums, there seems to be a pattern of MINI USA being willing to help if the dealer backs the customer.
If you have a solid service/oil change record and the car has been properly maintained you may get some help on the repair.
If you don't have your dealer's support, is there another dealer you can go to?

This is just off the top of my head.
There are lots of threads on turbo failure and many here have gone through it.
Polite persistence and a supportive dealer seem to be key.
I hope this helps.
Good luck.

OK. with this new info, I'm gunna go talk to the dealer. Thanks for the history. Turns out, they had it once before for the turbo and kept it for 32 days trying to figure it out. I'll let you guys know how this goes.

Well, I took the MINI into my dealership and they found the turbo was the issue. I was all ready with the info above but i didn't need it. They called the next day and said it was covered. No questions asked. The car is now back in my driveway all fixed and running well..Its a good day

What was the failure of the turbocharger?
Lack of oil? Failed bearing?
