This is funny. Just yesterday this girl i know was bitching about putting $120 worth of gas in here Suburban for her 1 kid and said that it was breaking her. I laughed at her and said that i go through $20 a week in gas. She then said "yeah, but at least i don't drive a girly car". I then asked her what made it so "girly" since just about every chick i know drives an SUV. She said because its small. I couldn't help but laugh at her ignorance. I also proceeded to tell her that i would run circles around her husbands "manly" Mustang.....

Curious thing, and I've never seen an answer to this:

If you're driving a girly MINI and she's driving a masculine Suburban,

Well, completion is left to the reader...

some of my friends sometimes give me a hard time and try to say I drive a girls car. I usually just say... lets race!

And why is that puzzling?

I am a woman who has been celebrating my 39th birthday for many years.

I drive a JCW.

Cars I have driven before buying my JCW (not a complete list or in order, because at my advanced age I forget things)

Datsun 200SX
Datsun B210
Citroen DS21
Volkswagen Scirocco
Honda Civic si
Firebird Formula
Plymouth Satellite

What do all of these cars have in common? Nothing except that I liked them at the time I bought them. And that they have either been limited edition, fully optioned models or seriously modded.

I will say this though, I was provoked into racing a Corvette on the way to work this morning and had the maturity to back off and let him think that he had a "faster car" when I realized that we were both doing 100+ mph on a road that ALWAYS has speed traps on a Saturday morning.

Def something to be said for getting old -- the signs of maturity might be appearing!

Definitely much better to spend the money that you would pay out for a ticket on fun things for the MINI.

Oh so true.
About 3 years ago when I was shopping for something to trade my 01 Mustang Bullitt in on I stopped at the local Chevy dealer. They had a GTO on the lot I wanted to drive. I told the salesman I was shopping $30k sports coupes and the like. I mentioned also wanting to look at Subby STis. The douche had the nerve to say " Oh yeah a faggin wagon huh". Salesman are more stupid than the rest of us on average.

Ah, an '01 Bullitt. Best-looking of the "New Edge" Mustangs. In fact, arguably the best looking factory Mustang since the early ones, IMO. Anyway, my dads got one of those, and it'll be powered by the new 5.0 any day now.

You do realize you were at a GM dealer, right? I think they only employee people with a 5th grade education or less - i shouldn't say that, i'm sure there are good ones (maybe). Honestly, this is why I walked away from a new 2011 Grand Cherokee and bought a MINI - stupid salespeople who offend. The idiot at the Chrysler dealer looked at me like i could not afford the Jeep and asked if I really wanted to test drive it. Little did he realize I planned to pay cash for whatever I bought and did so with the MINI. I've realized that what others think becomes very unimportant when you can buy any car you want.

I'm not certain why this thread continues.

I keep hoping it will die the death it deserves.

In what universe does anyone really care or does it matter if someone else feels your car is not manly enough, tough enough, big enough, tall enough or filled with enough testosterone to make your brains become subservient to your *********.

Come on. If you like the car, it is of no consequence what other think.

If someone belittles my car, I smile and write them off and consider them as a person whose opinion matters little or not at all.

The need for a retort, comeback or witticism is not as important as my recognition of their bigotry, small mindedness, and decision to not acknowledge their import in my life.

It sounds like you challenged the notion of what a "girly" car is suppose to be, which is a great way to counter such insults. These kind of statements are just the figment of someone's imagination trying to prove something for their personal benefit --as in this case to sell you a GM product.
That salesman needs to meet a girl I know at work. She gets excited and giddy around the HUGEST freaking pickups around. She currently drives a Dodge Ram with a stretch cab and would sell her soul for anything bigger! And the gayest guy I've ever met drives an all black 6-wheel GMC pickup with mega dark tinted windows. So if that doesn't quash stereotypes about car owners, what will?

They need to go on tour. Lots of B/S and misinformation out there.

"For the sake of marketing, we've seen some odd rally cars... Peugeot 307CC anyone? And in the case of the Mini Countryman, there certainly are some major marketing vectors in play. It's new! It's got 4WD and a 1.6 turbo, you know, just like the new rally rules say! It's a sporty car, honest, and in no way girlie! (I'm not making this last bit up - Ian Robertson, BMW's marketing chief, said: "The World Rally Championship commitment reinforces the key values of the Mini brand, ‘excitement' and ‘energy', as well underlining the manly side of the brand.")"

From http://www.topgear.com/uk/photos/min...2-08?imageNo=2 - I added the bold for emphasis.

Make of it what you will.

Cheers,

Charlie

Every time I go through my MC2 magazine (just got the new one today), I am always amazed at how macho those MINIs really are!

Great thread. Even though I obviously don't consider it to be one, I've often heard of the Mini being thought of as a "chick car" because it's small. I bought mine last week and have received at least 15 different "oh your new car is so cute" comments from some of the girls where I work. The first day I pulled up in it about 5 or 6 of them came outside and basically swarmed all over it. I 'm also the lead guitar player for a pretty rowdy classic rock/southern rock band and have gotten some good natured "hey nice chick car" comments from my bandmembers.

But when all is said and done, everyone loves the car and there's definitely something to be said for having a bunch of chicks checking out your car and striking up a conversation about it.

amen - "chick car" and "girly car" can be taken in two rather different ways huh...

i want to merge this thread with the "mean mini" photo thread and see if they cancel each other out!

(although I like both - just scientific curiosity)

cheers,

Charlie

My dad grew up on a farm with no electricity till he was 12, was in the military for over a decade, and currently drives a semi. He is 6ft4in and over 260lbs. Frequently seen wearing his John Deere hat and Carhart overalls. A less "GIRLY" man does not exist.

I took him for a "test drive" in my MINI this weekend, and the whole time he was driving he had the BIGGEST GRIN on his face. He could not stop talking about it the rest of the weekend. My mom on the other hand.. not really crazy about the MINI.

Like I keep telling people... it's not cute, it's MEAN!
