R55 Cold morning start ups
Cold morning start ups
Hope I can get an answer to this. We're dealing with temperatures of -19 C (-2.2 degrees F) up here right now. I went to start my wifes clubby this morning , it started but idled roughly then smoothed out a bit, then a little roughly again. I was getting a warning symbol on the column gage pod which looked like an engine with a diagonal half full mark across it and alternately getting a symbol of a clock (i think it was a clock) in the same location.
So seeing this I freeked and shut the car off . I started it up again with almost the same thing as the first time. I shut it off again and tried starting it 5 minutes later. I got the engine warning symbol again on the column gage assembly only this time it went away and the car was idling pretty well. I now have an small engine symbol light on in the center speedometer cluster . The car runs and sounds okay.Any ideas? Should i or shouldnt i be running it like this?

Well there is many things it could be and depending on the color of the engine symbol (yellow or red) as to how bad it is.
If it is red I would recommend you call the dealer right away and have it towed.
If it is yellow then it probably has to do with a sensor or moving part that really does not like the cold but after it warms up then the problem will go away. In this case it is not an emergency to have it looked at but if it happens over and over again in the really cold temps then you may want to have them replace the part(s) that are causing the light to come on.
There should be codes stored that the dealer or local repair shop can look at to determine what the exact cause is.
Also the manual can give you some idea of what the cause may be. Look it up.

Thanks Shantzy. The warning has dissapeared and the car is running fine now. I called the dealer and they told me to check the gas cap. I removed the cap and cleared the ice around the gas cap recess area and reinstalled. When i removed the cap i got a real strong smell of fuel(more than normal) so i figure there was some vapor lock there or something because all the ice around the cap. I will get the codes read this week to see if there are any problems there to worry about. Cheers .
On my last appt with dealer, they replaced the intake manifold with a new one with essentially 'carb heat' to keep the intake dry. They said the roughness was due to ice in intake. Also they did the chain tighten for clattering.
broken arm here making typing a chore, sorry so brusque.
