My 2008 Clubman S is coming up on 10,000 miles with 0 problems and I sometimes can get 40mpg. A blast to drive, no regrets.

Heck, if he's only 6 yrs. old. just remove the headrest, that should solve the problem completely...

This sums it up for me perfectly. I wish BMW would get their act together and make these consistently reliable cars with higher build quality (they are not cheap cars -- mine was $32k with a $1000 discount), but then again no German car is consistently reliable!

It would be great if being a blast to drive were the only requirement for an amazing car -- then the MINI would win over anything I can think of in this price range; hell, even above this price range!

Everyone I personally know (now it's up to 4) has had problems with their MINIs, but they (and me) are keeping them -- at least until the warranty runs out -- because they're so incredibly fun to drive. But this alone will not guarantee tons of repeat customers! I know, I know, I know -- some of you have not had any problems. Consider yourself the lucky!

Fun and Reliable?

I've decided to keep my 2009 Clubman S, but the reliability problems that I have had made me decide to buy the 100,000 mile maintenance contract and the 100,000 warranty contract.

That way I do not have to worry and can smile when I go to my Mini dealer. No "mun all fun"-LOL!

Oh yeah! 2008 with 64k miles now over 20 months. Had the timing chain resolved by dealer with no arm twisting required. Sunroof still will not open when it is hot, gotta run with windows open to cool it. No other issues to day and I personally am happy with interior finishes. Its not BMW quality but much better than Japanese or American products that I have been in.
Otherwise, got the options I wanted so love the way the car works. I drive it fairly hard so keep the carbon out
I count myself lucky for the pleasure I have gotten from this car without having the glitches that others have.

I love my Mini, but I have the death rattle and for that reason alone, I'll be trading it in once the warranty comes close to ending. I'm not sure what is going to give me as much fun as the Mini has, but paying out of warranty for what could be a serious engine fix, is also not fun.

This is a fairly common issue in the S MINIs (the mechanics supervisor at my dealer even mentioned that in passing once). Let's face it, there IS a reason why they get only average reliability in so many review sites/organizations, including completely random sampling ones like JD Power.

A possibility is to just defy the warranty and have a great mechanic replace some of the cheaper parts (if they fail) with high quality aftermarket parts, if it's possible. I plan on doing that if the clutch goes early, for example.

On another note to some other posters: It's OK to admit that MINI is not perfect! They're just a corporation. Some of your cars may be fine, and that's great! But don't reduce those of us who do have problems to a tiny minority -- it's just not the truth of the matter.

After 14000 miles, we still love ours. July 29, 2010 will be the 2yr birthday and its just as much fun today as it was the day we picked it up at the lot. We fight over who gets to drive. Only problem we've had is the window gremlin. Twice now have had it fixed. The last fix has lasted about 3mo, so thinking we finally got the correct software load.

Mine's an Aug '08 build and I've got over 36,000 miles on it.

So far, no problems and based on that experience, I'd do it again in a heartbeat (except can't get Oxygen Blue anymore). I know others on here have had serious problems with their MINIs or their dealers. Those are scary horror stories to me and I'm just glad I'm not in their camp.

I love this car!

Yeah, I would like to know what they are charging for the 100K warranty as well. I have not had any issues yet but i only have 2500 miles on the car thus far. This is one car I would like to keep past 100K but I wouldn't likely do it without a warranty and I am not generally the warranty type...but with this car...

100,000 mile warranty contract

Sorry. I have been off line for a number of days. I paid $2352 last week for the 100,000 warranty contract. Quite a bit of money, but I already have the 100,000 mile maintenance contract, so with both contracts, I only have a $50 copay for anything that goes wrong for that duration and nothing to pay for any mantenance done for that time frame.

Love the car and do not want to have to spend any more money on it for 100,000 miles.
