R55 Cruddy Reverse Light Still A Problem?
easy solution
I'm also suffering from the poor (to put it mildly) backup light and have been wrestling with a solution now for a couple of months. So the easiest solution I've come up with is, just turn on the emergency flashers. Those yellow lights have a huge reflector and really light things up behind you quite nicely. When the weather gets warmer I plan on wiring the flasher lights to the backup light (with a bunch of diodes of course) so that they come on automatically. I'll probably also install a switch to turn them off in case I have a problem during state inspection.
Im one of the unfortunate ones who didnt order the rear fog light for my '09 Clubman. Man as much researching as I had done prior, I wish I had found out how low level the reverse light is with just the stock single reverse light before I ordered mine!!!
I've read most all the posts regarding this issue and the best idea I could find was to find a dealer in the UK who would sell me the UK version of the left side rear light assy and have it installed. Not sure who would do the installation though and of course the cost would probably be high as well.
No one mentioned it but I wonder if having the rear fog added (switch and all) is possible and how many arms and legs would that cost! Anyone ever checked into that??
At any rate Im sittin here dumber-than-dirt hopin' someone has come up with a decent answer to this (a very real) problem.
Someone did mention duct taping a flashlight on back. Hmmmmm....

Now two years later, anything new on this stupid single reverse light issue?
With the British tail lamp being prohibitably expensive, I too am considering RallyStance's idea of just splicing in an additional reverse light. My initial though leans toward a pair of small clear truck marker lights mounted left and right of the license plate on the bottom side of the bumper. Should be discreet enough, symmetrical and actually about equivalent to standard reverse lamps on US cars.
The real Bentwrench approach would be to just mount a damn Hella fog lamp back there like we did on rally cars back in my SCCA days.
