Commercial Plates in CA

Hello all, wonder if the MCC can be fitted with commercial plates in CA?

The MC can as can any hatchback. Just wonder what DMV would say about those Clubman rear doors?

If the title say wagon then it's good to go.

Not sure what your question really is.

Most states will allow any vehicle to be registered as commercial as long as it is used for business.

Some states automatically make pickup trucks commercial plates as they can be used for commercial purposes very easily.

So I guess my other question is "why would you want commercial plates?"

Yeah, that's what the DMV person asked me when I took in my Alfa GTV6 too.

In California your vehicle has to be either:
truck
van
station wagon
hatchback

So unless the MCC is classified as a wagon, the swing out doors might present a hurdle (no hatchback). I doubt it - but would be nice to know someone here in CA as done so effortlessly.

I am a commercial photographer and having commercial plates is often a godsend for offloading gear in downtown areas.

Commercial plates here cost the same as regular - with a fee added based on weight of the vehicle (need to take in a bill of lading). My R5 Renault did not even register on the truck scale so they just charged me $10.

My 1800ES Volvo is listed as a wagon so no problem - pretty leary though of sharing space with those big 'brown' trucks.

question for you

schatzy62- Forgot to ask what MGP is your MCCS norm for +/-72mph w/CC and what RPM at that speed?

We got the sport package but replaced the runflats/wheels with 15 inch 195 Yokohamas and our RPM dropped to +/-3,000 from 3,300 at 72mph.

Nice that a "doughnut" spare fits in the MCC well.

From this section of the California State Law it looks to me that a "Station Wagon" can be registered as either Non Commercial or Commercial depending on it's use and ownership. As to how the state classifies it that is a good question i coudl not find anything on that but you could always argue that it is a station wagon if it is not classified that way just look as its shape and storage capacity, just like a wagon.

If the fees for standard registration are the same and the weight fee is very low as it was with your other vehicle then i would go for that. Where i live in Massachusetts commercial registration is more expensive but in some cases that can be offset by lower insurance costs. Unfortunately commercial plates do nothing for getting out of parking fines etc., in fact they may get you a ticket for parking before a non commercial vehicle in some areas like down town Boston.

Are you sure you have the S model, there is no way that i know of that you could fit 15" rims over the S brakes. even 16" are very tight.

At any rate. I run 205/45R17" OEM runflats and at 70MPH gps/odbii speed and 73 on the big speedo i am running at 2950 RPM.

The thing is the RPM change should be very little (not more than about 50-60 RPM for a proper tire change. The overall Revolutions per mile of the tire itself should only change about +/-50 at max for a change of proper tires to fit the car. Anything more than that will make a large change in the accuracy of the speedometer.

What band an model tires were on the car and what did you change to?

That's the rub. If buying new from a dealer they insist on supplying standard registration - we talked with them until blue in the face trying to get commercial reg.

"Are you sure you have the S model"

Ours is a 'Justa'

"What band an model tires were on the car and what did you change to?"

Not sure what the Sport package came with but what we have now is 195x60/15 Yokohama Avid H4. They are just a bit taller than standard, perhaps .2 inches. Notice little difference in acceleration but the RPM's have dropped and traction is still good.
