I have found it's use!!! It holds a tin of Mini Mac's!(small cigars!) How thoughtful of them to think of me in the design process l was hoping that they would have a spot closer than the glove box to hold them and they did l also plan on storing a remote control there........so if anyone in the car doesn't like my driving, well l'll just hit the mute button!
PPawlus...things to put in the door storage.
TicTacs
Small Hand
Glock.
I don't know how small your glock is but I tried to put an HK 40 in there and there is no easy access to get it in and out.
Now it just lays on the floor directly in front of the seat on the rubber mat. For the most part, it doesn't slide around but there is no real good place to put it.
As far as the slots, I have no idea. I've often wondered but I agree with the poster that said it's just to remind us of our quirky cars.
After looking my MINI over, my husband (if I didn't say it was his idea, he would have me flogged, lol) came to the conclusion that it is for an umbrella (a compact size one, to match the MINI of course)- the compartment being for the main part of the umbrella, and the slot being for the stem, or rod, or whatever it's called.

just like my Maybach has a compartment for my other umbrella, ella, ella, ella..

The tiny MINI umbrella would not even suit that purpose. The rod would have to be so small that it would be a midget umbrella.

Mini does have an umbrella, but it comes with a holder that is mounted in place of the net on the passenger side of the center console. It's a European option. There's been a thread or two about getting the parts to install them in the US cars.
Not sure about the '06s, but I find little difference space-wise between my '07 (new design) and my '03 (initial design). The big plus for me is that the redesign makes the armrest more functional/comfortable than my '03 w/o the awkward bulge that appeared on later first gen MINIs. To me it was a step in the right direction...the whole roll-cage themed interior, while cool on some level, never made a great deal of sense.
I believe the MINI designers sat in a brainstorming room and tried to think of some strange design that would get us all talking in the unlikely event that we ran out of things to discuss.
Right now some industrial designer is sitting at home, drinking a cold beer, reading this thread and laughing his azz off that his indentation has caused this much consternation.
Come on, if you knew that your work would be so scrutinized by a bunch of OC owners (guilty here) wouldn't you throw a few mysteries around just to mess with them?
So, who's going to start calling Mini's design office to hunt this guy down?
It's obvious you folks aren't urban dwellers or skyscraper rats during the day. It holds the scan cards for getting in and out of parking garages. Very handy. Wish I had one.
