Cooper convertible changes in 2007-08?

So now that we know the next generation 07 hard top models will be out in late 2006 has anyone heard what will happen to the convertible? No hard evidence of its fate anywhere and the rumors are that the next generation convertible won't be introduced until several years after the new 07's are out. Seems kind of strange that they would keep producing the existing model with "old technology" alongside the new one. I am wondering what they will do for the engine as it is my understanding that the agreement with Daimler/Chrysler for the Tritec runs out before then. Any speculation or better yet any real information on this?

BMW is doing exactly that right now with the 3 series. The 3'er sedan is on the new (E90) platform while the convertible and the coupe are both being produced on the previous generation (E46) platform.

I fully expect MINI to do the same thing for the first year or two until the MK2 Cabrio is ready.

This is a good thing in case the new platform doesn't appeal to everyone. There will still be an opportunity to purchase a first gen MINI for a few years.

Does BMW have more than one plant bor building the 3 series? I wonder how a single factory will be able to handle two pretty different platforms. From what I've heard, the painting process alone will be quite different, although that my have been primarily for the hard top's roof which certainly doesn't affect the Cabrio. I personally was hoping they would stop production after only two years which would make my 05 MCSC that much rarer on the road.
