2005 Convertible Begins Stage 2 then Stops

I have a 2005 Mini Cooper Convertible and it just began having an issue opening the convertible top last night

1) It goes into sunroof mode just fine
2) When I press the open top button to go from sunroof mode to stage 2, it begins to slide back and do its normal motion
3) the driver's side latch disengages
4) the passenger side latch does not disengage
5) then the system halts and the open top button flashes a red light

If I press the open top button again at this point I hear a clicking sound like an actuator trying to do something but can't pinpoint where exactly I hear it from.

I thought that the passenger side latch mechanism might be stuck so I manually disengaged it with the top completely closed, but the system does the same thing when I go to open it.

I thought there might be a cable issue on the passenger side since the latch didn't disengage, but using the close top button my manually disengaged latch will close and engage itself just fine going from where it ceases to open back to fully closed.

I have confirmed that both trunk switches are pressed in (though I don't think it would even begin stage 2 if these weren't pressed).

Any recommendations on what to troubleshoot next?

I re-examined again this morning and it doesn't look like the passenger side latch completely re-engaged like I thought in case that adds some information on what I should be looking at.

Mechanic got it disassembled and found a broken part but can't identify what it is. Pics and description here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ml#post4054605

Looks like an internal part of the main cassette in the side rail, I don't see that part alone.

54347181023 main cassette.

Looks like it snapped at the end.
