New here. Need help with Convertible top!!

Like the title says I'm new here but have a convertible top problem. I have read all I could find here but no similar problems posted.

I have an 05 and was putting the top down today (Yes 70 degrees in AZ!) anyway about 1/2 way down I heard a "Snap" from the left rail. Now the top won't close as the left Claw that grabs the windshield frame is not in the open position and I can't get it open.

The dealer is about a 3 hour drive. Does anyone know of a shop in Tucson that has any experience with these tops?

Or any ideas on how I might fix it myself?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to NAM! I'm moving your thread to Cabrio Talk, where you will hopefully get responses from folks who have had the same experience.

If you heard a SNAP, something is almost certainly broken. Best advice I have:

-> compare the "GOOD" side of the top mechanism to the "BROKEN" side and try to identify what broke.
-> go to REALOEM.com to see an exploded diagram of the mechanism and maybe some hints on removing some pieces.
-> also be careful, check the entire mechanism carefully. The piece that broke may have resulted from something else that isn't working right. (that is, you might replace the broken piece and then it will break again because the problem is caused by something else).

Please remember to report back. Good Luck, Happy Holidays.

It might be a snapped roof cable. I've hardly seen it mentioned here, but it has been reported many times on MINI2:

I did compare both sides and visually there is no difference that can be seen. I can't quite figure out how to remove some of the covers. I need to check out some of those other sites above and see if there is a fix in there.

Just hope it's not going to cost me as much as a new top!!

Thanks for all the replies. After some research I'm pretty sure what I have is a snapped cable. Although my car is out of warranty the dealer said they would take care of it.

Two thumbs up for Scottsdale Mini and the service dept!!!!
