The basic problem is that "over there" if some idiot almost beheads himself doing something stupid, he will be too embarassed to even tell anyone, where as here, he will sue MINI for his stupidity. That is why the auto-up, headlight adjustments, sunroof auto features all do not exist on the US version.

Yup. It's amazing they even allowed us to use a pen when we signed the paperwork to buy our MINIs. A crayon would have been much safer.

.... until us rebels are motivated enough to defeat the nanny system... which is half the fun... (OK, at least 10% of the fun)...

Things like burble and colors (except for the roof) that are not specific to the cabrio like burble are really off topic for this thread, and better discussed in the more general forums.

I would like to see:
  • Reading and footwell lights for rear passengers. A rear dome light integrated in the roof would also be useful.
  • Better chassis stiffening from the factory. The M7 UnderStrut system did wonders for my car, and it should not have made such a big difference.
  • Rear visibility improvements. I suspect that the basic configuration will be similar to the current model, and the rear visibility issues will continue to be similar. The passenger side mirror should be extra wide angle (like Multivex) and the roll bars block less of the view. I think the rear camera is no longer available in the R56 and this would be helpful if they bring it back for the new cabrio.
  • At least all the same seating choices as the hardtop. The cabrio never got the red/black cloth/leather combination.

another thing our friends across the pond enjoy and we don't
Are you sure? I don't think MINI ever had auto-up windows anywhere on any car model. MINI did not install sensors to detect windows hitting an obstruction.

They considered that, but realized some people have been compelled to eat the crayons due to their attractive coloring.

I like the ideas so far, and I'm glad my burble is intact! I would like them to add a parcel shelf too, but the lawyers probably won't allow that either....

From Gabe's review on motoringfile of Ian's auto-up module:

Among one of the more frustrating features that is locked out of the US spec MINIs are auto-up windows. It's all the more irritating because all BMWs in the US have this very feature. Why this is available on MINIs elsewhere in the world and not in the US is beyond me.
In fact to my knowledge the only US spec MINIs with this feature were the very US spec cars that were delivered for the initial launch and built in February of '02.
And from Ian's (GBMINI) site:
we know that the MINI can automatically do this, since English & European MINIs do - presumably litigation risks in USA forced MINI USA to disable this feature.

You are correct. I think non-US MINIs just rely on the peak in current in the electric motors from resistance of a head wedged in the window (same thing that tells the system that the window is closed) -- but this is probably not sensitive enough for the US public.

Sorry -- I guess I'm just taking us further off-topic

Agreed!

With that in mind, if MINI doesn't improve the rear visibility, a back-up camera would be a nice option.

Though colors are a "general topic", I hope 2009 sees a return of Hot Orange to the cabrio community.

There are some colors unique to cabrios so color discussion is on topic & frankly if I want a burble on my cabrio I'm gonna say it. How bout give the cabrios burbles but don't let the tintops have them... there on topic now

The antenna is too long on the cabrio. It looks kind of silly sitting in the middle of the front roof. A shorter one would be nice, and I know Alta makes one...but it doesn't bother me THAT much.

Ohh I like my antenna. It also seems to be a dragonfly magnet

I have a crazy one but, what the heck, I'll toss it out there. How about a power rear view mirror that automatically adjusts itself for the top up and down. (Or am I the only one who has to raise it up a little when the top is down?)

What changed in 06. I've got a boot light. Left side of the boot, but further down that I'd like.

as for the one touch open. The open button does it with 2 touches, but you gotta hold it. My key does the open, but that's more like 10 touches.. LOL

I know this is a lot to ask, but how about lowering the windshield wiper fluid pressure when the top's down. That might sound ****, but yesterday I needed to get some bug remains off of my windshield and I think I got just as wet as it did!

Actually, for 2007 MINIs, only cabrio's burble !!! The turbo tintops don't.

ANOTHER REASON TO GET A CABRIO !!!!

How about roll bars that pop up when you need them rather than take up 80% of the rear window view all the time.

I thought we had a parcel shelf in the back, it is just inaccessible and useless except to use from the bottom to keep from over stacking stuff in the boot

I personally like the rollbar look. I think it accents the car nicely. It is a major pain when the top is up though, but I try to keep that a non-issue as much as possible!

Maybe that's just what happens when you drive a MINI.
