Programming vehicle functions

I just purchased a 'new to me' 2004 S coupe.

Pardon me if I vent a bit, love the car, owners manual not!

Every place where there is a function that you can change such as door locks, lamp delay etc. there is that ubiquitous little stick man that says that my dealer will be 'happy' to change that for me. Happy as in $$$$$, I presume.

Changing those functions in my CTS and Corvette is pretty straightforward as there is direct access to those functions in the computer.

Try as might I can't find anything that mentions that any where in the manual or on the web. Is there some series of button presses or magical incantations to access these programming options?? Something along the line of resetting the service interval (another black art cleverly missing from the manual).

Or does this require an OBD2 reader/writer or something similar. Thanks in advance.

Pre-2007, most things had to be changed by the dealer. When I bought my 2004 used, after about a week I brought it in to the dealer and they did the changes for free. It took about 5 minutes.

Yep, pre-2007 the dealer has to do it. And unlike LynnEl's fortunate experience, most do charge about $25 to make changes -- even if you just bought it used.

I have a new to me 2005. I took it to the dealer and said I wanted changes, such as daytime run lights. They went over a whole list of functions that can be set with the key. Yeah they charged me $60, but that charge was for all the changes I wanted. It was the price to connect it to the computer, and took a few minutes. If I had access to the on board computer I am sure it would have taken me much longer to figure out. So, to me the $60 was well spent getting everything set the way I wanted.

Dealer has to do it, they may or may not do it gratis. Mine made some changes and reprogrammed to recognize my rear fog light (that I installed) for free.

FWIW, we asked MINI of Sterling (asked them point blank) to reprogram some of our options and not charge us. This was during a scheduled oil change visit per the display. They categorically refused.

That said, we have had no other negative experiences with MoS.

I hope I won't be having any negative experiences with MoS. I have an appointment Thursday to get my voice recognition to work. I am not optomistic, given that they keep asking me if I am talking about the bluetooth and made gomer pyle faces when I explained to them what voice recognition is. Funny, whenever they don't respond, they blame it on the fact that they were "in training" yet they don't even know what the cars have.
