Chicago has a very large and active Mini club. Here is their forum:

Here is the club website:

I've worked there before. Great place!

I guess it depends, as always, on what you can afford and what your interests are. Just to toss out some neighborhoods for you to look at: Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wrigleyville, Rogers Park, Andersonville, Wicker Park, Bucktown. The last few neighborhoods will probably be the most affordable.

In Chicago itself, or you willing to do alittle traveling to get to your job?

Also, you'll be able to get an idea for rents in Chicago proper by looking at www.chicagoreader.com.

Really, you're going to need to give a little more info. Are you looking for apartment, condo, house, etc. Are you looking for upscale, low-rent, etc. How far are you willing to be from the loop (downtown). Remember, 15 miles can be an hour and a half in morning commute.

work with us here...

I guess the real question is: where will you be working (in the city or burbs) and how do you plan on getting there (bus/train or driving)...

If you're going to work in or around the Loop, you're going to want to live near public transportation. If in the 'burbs... you might want to live near so you won't have to commute an hour... just my opinion... the other consideration will be if you're single or have a SO.

Chicago is known for it's neighborhoods. Almost cities within a city. And don't forget the surrounding suburbs....

Are you talking passenger rail, or commercial (commerce) rail. Passenger rail is right in the loop, commerce is outside of the city (Cicero, I believe) - actually, there are a few others.

In the city, $1k will get you a cardboard box, and an alley to squat in (unless you'll take on roomies and split rent). You may have better luck near the rails for that price.

Why on earth do you want to leave Denver? I'd move out there in a heartbeat if I could do a lateral transfer.

my question also... are you talking Amtrak/BN or Metra rail?? and, where are you ending up (N or S side or in the Loop) Unfortunately, we're talking about a big city with a lot of rails crisscrossing all over the place...

That is a very good assessment. $1K/month won't get you a whole lot even some distance away and it won't get you a house anywhere within 50 miles of the City except maybe in the worst neighborhoods.

I have lived in the Chicago area my whole life except for college years. I love the City but would love to leave for better weather. Coming from Denver won't be a weather shock to you but it sounds like the cost of housing will be.
