R50/53 The Crackling Noise
The Crackling Noise
MINIUSA has another word for what we call the ehaust burble. Taken from MINI literature I received Friday: THE CRACKLING NOISE. When motoring in your convertible (MINI) you'll probably hear an agressive sort of crackoing or popping comming from the exhaust. That's actually been built in on purpose. Back in the day, the classic rally Minis made that type of sound as they raced through Europe. We thought it was only fitting to keep it."
So there you have it, our exhausts don't burble, or backfire, they "crackle".

All you R56ers need to start calling MiniUSA & complaining that you want the burble (sorry I prefer the word burble over crackle
) back because the complainers (a clear minority) are the ones who got them to get rid of it. So please start complaining so they will bring it back by the time I need to buy a new Mini

Just another renaming trick...
Swamp - - - -> "Wetlands"
Dump - - - - -> "Landfill"
Used - - - - -> "Pre-owned"
Backfire - - - -> "Crackling Noise"

..........Hmmmm..........Crackle.........I'm thinking.......I kind of like it. I liked the crackle out of my 05 MCS with the Milltek and my 06 JCW has just enough crackle to keep me from slapping a Milltek on him. My MINI crackles!
I've heard many types of race cars crackle on decel. Its a wicked sound.....just plain Wicked! It speaks Power. I never liked the "burble" nomenclature. A brook "burbles". "Burble" sounds a little Martha Stewart to me. A "burbling" brook is soothing. When I'm diving hot into a corner, nobody will think that the sounds coming out of my MINI are soothing; I guarantee it! Therefore I propose a new motto: Lets Crackle!

An aftermarket exhaust (once they are available) should bring back the burble/crackle for the R56. And that's REAL burble, not the hollywood variety made of silicone and programmed into the ECU!
Crackle on!
Crackle on!
I thought the "crackle" one hears in older sports cars was the result of traces of fuel in the carburetors igniting on decel, and that MINI had to program the fuel injectors on the new MINIs to simulate that. Why would changing the exhaust affect this?
I love my "crackle" but I think they stopped the crackle on the '07's because of the turbo. On the earlier 02-06's there's nothing in the way from the exhaust to the catalytic converter, so a little gas is ok, but because the '07 has a turbo they probably didn't want to be sending unburnt gas through the exhaust turbine, so they stopped it.

Here is one from a discussion about the new Camaro concept car exhibited at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, mentioned on www.AutomotiveHistoryOnline.com:
"The convertible concept has last year's ram-air 6.0-liter LS2 engine, rated 400 horsepower and with Active Displacement Management and an exhaust note that makes a sensuous, throaty burble. Built on the next-generation Holden/ Zeta architecture, the car has independent rear suspension. It's likely the base engine will be the DOHC 3.6-liter V-6, not the 3.9-liter pushrod V-6." (Text bolded and italicized by me.)
Here's a mention in a discussion of Packards on www.AutomotiveRestorations.com, which indicates the term has been in automotive usage for quite some time:
"At the wheel, the big, torquey sidevalve sweeps the Packard along with effortless grace, the exhaust a muted burble exiting a long way behind."
Another example is in a review of the 2006 Infiniti M in www.automotivearticles.com:
"Speed freaks will be plenty satisfied with this engine. And though it lacks that distinctive V8 exhaust burble, the sounds this V6 makes are equally intoxicating. In fact, we found the semi-exotic exhaust note of the M35 to be even more inciting than the V8 – perhaps because we knew we could wind it out further than the V8 without getting ourselves into major trouble with the PSPD. " (PSPD = Palms Springs Police Department)
Not all that Martha Stewart-esque now, is it?
Burble....it's a very good thing.

I'm not convinced the R56 has eliminated the backfire, crackle, burble, or whatever. I clearly heard a small backfire today, and the exhaust has a throaty growl when going through the gears. Maybe they redesigned it in? Or maybe I need servicing? Car has 1500 miles on it.
Ideas? It doesn't bother me, but it DID surprise me!

I do not believe that's the case. It's not the R56 exhaust which has eliminated the burble, but a reprogramming of the ECU (European cars have kept the burble) . . . but maybe MTH or another vendor will come up with a fix -- although it sure would be nice if MINI USA just made this a factory programmable option.
A fuel injector just before the exhaust tips, and a sparkplug... now THAT makes a "crackle"! Had this friend, helped him install one of those in the megaphone exhausts on his '51 Chevy pickup... awesome. More of a "blam" than a "crackle", though. And illegal as all getout.
