R50/53 Power Steering Problems
I rented a LY/W MC with CVT from Budget in Beverly Hills to attend the IJ premiere (my Mini is in Hawaii). The car had 12,000 miles on it. The driver's seat was broken, the little oval with the to-come, hands-free speaker grille was in the glove compartment, and the car had obviously been driven hard.
As I arrived at Paramount, I was instructed to make a 90 degree right turn to get into position and suddenly the power steering went out. It took my 6'4" passenger, me and the parking person to wrench the wheel and turn the car 90 degrees. I parked, and when I restarted, the steering was better but not okay.
Good news--Budget didn't charge me for the car and picked it up. But wow, what a problem. My Mini has never had such a problem, thank heaven. I shudder to imagine it happening while driving at more than 2 mph.

Don't worry about it. If you are driving more than about 5 MPH, the power
steering motor does very little work, so at any reasonable speed, you won't
even notice it.
It's not going to make it any harder to steer going down even a local street
at 30 MPH.

Old thread, new problem for me!
Last night my power steering went haywire!
It works a few minutes after I start driving. Then a turn comes up and WTF?!!
It's like driving my '48 Chevy pickup with a load!!
So it can't be a blown fuse.
Damn good thing I just scheduled for a service on other issues this Monday.

Just got a call...
...from Scottsdale MINI and it's fixed!
The computer showed a fault, and I have a new steering motor. They also replaced the window motor. And also got an oil change before the countdown clock zeroed!
Justin at Scottsdale MINI is da man.

Power steering problem also
My 2003 Cooper also has PS resistance like yours did. How much did fix set you back?
okay, here's the update to the situation (better late than never):
i actually got my MINI back in 1 week instead of 2, with some help from MINI USA. i contacted them after dropping my car off at the dealership (Schomp), to express my concern over the pump failure and the fuse/fuse box problem. they said they would follow up with Schomp.
MINI USA called the dealership and informed them that the fuse was available without having to replace the entire box (unless it was damaged) and gave them the part info. so, i'm happy to report that the MINI is back in my garage and the Power Steering appears to be working fine - althought it had been out so long that i forgot how loud the Pump Motor really is... it's embarrassing!
here's the breakdown of parts and service that was done to fix the problem:
tech comment:
diagnose voltage supply problem to electric power steering pump fuse (100 amp) in bottom of fuse box in engine compartment shorted out remove fuse box assembly in engine compartment and replaced fuse replaced electric power steering pump drawing too much resistance this was the reason the 100amp fuse was blown (they didn't use punctuation, so neither did i)
Repair 1:
Checking Fault Memory (.4 hrs)
Repair 2:
R&I Fuse Box, Engine Compartment (.7 hrs)
Repair 3:
Replace power steering pump for power assisted steering (.7 hrs)
Parts:
61138364631 Fuse 100A
32416760567 Rmfd Pump <--- does this mean remanufactured ???
00000000ATF Dexron II
07129952109 Clamp/Rec
82111468041 Prntosin
i was so excited to have my car back when i picked it up that i forgot to ask for the old fuse, or to see what the items on the repair list were...

I found the 100 amp fuse for the electric power steering!!!! If your looking for the 100 amp fuse it is on the underside of the engine compartment fuse box. Here are the simple easy steps; Disconnect your battery, disconnect the power line feeding the fuse box and the two bolts securing the fuse box in place. Rotate the fuse box towards the front of the vehicle. You will find a cover w/ a picture icon of a manual/book on the underside of the fuse box. Remove the cover and you will see the 100 amp fuse along w/ two other 50 amp fuses! What was Mini thinking...bastards!!
