I drove my MINI for a while without an armrest. I missed not having one and bought a $50 "elbo landing device". It's great, use it often and can even shift gears while my elbo is resting.
resmini, do you have a picture (or link to the manufactuer) for this item? I'd love to see it.

My dad wasn't impressed with the OEM armrest, so he bought this one. No issues with sliding because it is hinged and offers more space inside!

Armrest: attach velcro inside the lip at the very front and at the tip of the lid. I haven't done this but I bet it's doable

No need for that! Just pop off the cover, then use a Torx bit to remove it if it's that bad!

My pants snagged on the lever for the first week or so I owned the car. It almost NEVER happens now (nearly 2 years later). I think you'll adapt in time without even realizing that you're doing anything differently.

Regarding the armrest....I dunno. I don't have it, but I did swap my 05 MCS with my buddy's wife's 06 MCSa with an armrest. Hers didn't pop open by itself, but I still didn't like it much. If you need an armrest, maybe an aftermarket one will suit your needs better. Go to a big MINI meet, and look around somebody there will every possible variation...

That's funny... I don't know why I figured I was the only clutz to have the pant cuff snag problem. But ONLY with a handful of electronics, squeezing out of the MINI in my ultra-thin garage. HAHA

After driving cars with an armrest and now having the MINI without the armrest, I think I prefer not having it. Especially having a manual shift. But, Whether its stick or auto, not having the armrest encourages the driver to keep both hands on the wheel. I also noticed that leaning on the armrest used to cause lower back pain on my right side.

I've only snagged my pants on the seat adjuster a few times... I've learned to be a bit careful getting out, not a big problem though overall.

Can't figure out how pants legs get caught. I've never come even close to having that happen, even in cramped parking situations.

I have had my 2006 MCS for exactly one year now and have had no problems
with either. My factory armrest has never come open due to my arm being
one it. In fact when I close it I feel a little snap that it is latched. And how
in the hell do you get your pants caught in the seat adjustment?

Regarding the seat height adjuster: I have indeed snagged my pantleg on it a few times while getting out. That's a few times in over 3 years, so I'm not that worried about it.

Regarding the armrest: since I finally found the best MINI armrest in the world, I don't have the problem of it sliding open anymore.

Man is that irritating. The armrest slides open every few minutes. Same thing for my wife. Love to know how to fix this. Doesn't seems t be an adjustment.

Some of you smart people have a fix besides tossing it or replacing it?

We just picked up our 06 MCSc Friday last, and have been wondering about the arm rest. I thought of a screw through the back of the cover, but that seems kind of tacky? (just kidding, I would never do that to a new car!!) I really don't seen any way of modifying it, so as an option I didn't order, I have no problem with removing it. Kind of too bad, though, we both have found ourselves using it. Oh well.... In regards to the original posting, I have not been in and out enough to find the seat adjusted a problem, and I don't commonly wear baggy pants.

I'm a bit surprised that nobody has suggested wearing spandex to solve the pant snagging problem. I mean the OP is in LA, so it's not like he'd stick out like a sore thumb or anything....

In an effort the try to solve the pants catching issue for myself as well as others, without having to resort to sawing off the crank (which at this point, I am pretty much ready to do), I experimented with the seat settings. I had my seat cranked down fairly low. In this case, my pants (normal straight leg jeans) would catch almost every time I exited the car. If I raised the seat, this causes the seat to move closer to the crank for some odd reason. Raising the seat made it less easy to catch ones pants upon exiting. Raising the seat even more pretty much solves the problem. If you like the seat lower, you have to experiment with seat height in ratio to pants catching for your particular situation.

No armrest, but with the seat cranked all the way down I have never caught my pants - I wonder what's going on for those who do?

Spandex, it's a privilege, not a right!

Hmmm...rather than have an actual armrest, I like to have a few small pillows available to stuff in the area above where the OEM armrest is installed. I don't usually need an armrest, but when I am on a long stretch, like on I-10 through Texas, I appreciate a little extra cushioning.

Yep, the arm rest thing sucks! Everytime I get a loaner with one, it just reaffirms why I don't have one.

You're not alone on the snagging thing. I've only had it happen once or twice to me, but the previous owner of my husband's MINI had actually broken the thing off when it snagged as he was getting out of the car (seat all the way down as he is pretty tall). We got it replaced when we bought it. I know my purse strap snags the passenger side one all the time and that's really irritating.
