Or, maybe the Internet has magnified the greed factor. With very little effort, you can reach a very large audience (example - NAM). If someone wants to screw someone else, the Internet has certainly made it a whole lot easier than before.... Another example would be phishing; absent the Internet, it really would be a much smaller issue than it presently is. Mind you, I am not complaining about the Internet; just pointing out some of the downside to it.

Having been in the car business for a brief period and having countless sales training over the years, reading your original listing makes me think that they identified you as an "emotional" seller. This usually applies to exploiting the buyer, but in this case, they were able to identify what your hot buttons were and played to that for their benefit.

It's counterintuitive to think that putting all the caveats against selling to someone other than a mini enthusiast in your ad would result in the opposite, but, the guys that pull stuff like this are professionals and they identified what your motives were and used that against you. They live and breathe exploiting any informational advantage they can get in a negotiation. Having been around these types of people, they don't think of it as lying, they see the whole thing as a game, just like sitting at the poker table. That's how they live with themselves.

You know, that's what crossed my mind when I read through this thread, but have had no experience with people like this to provide backup. I think it's probably what happened here.

Wow, that's a good observation and you are probably exactly right!

Some of us do read.

I am happy that you did share this story with us, I can understand how you feel. I am sorry.

Bottom line is, even though there are a few bad folks out there, the majority are good, so dont give up hope on the rest of us.

You were honest and tried to do right by the buyer. Out of your control that they lied. I think my takeaway is to not let the car go until I am confident I actually have the cash money.

Cheers.

The MINI I sold was perfect, if they want to sell the tranny, they can't disclose the condition of it because they don't know it. I was given the tranny by a friend for this reason. It worked fine except for a ticking sound, but really I don't care. It's not in my hands, and I'm not guilty of anything.

Good take on the matter. I agree with your view on how some people are basically players. Lying to get what you want is not honest, but honesty is getting pretty rare these days.

Tell you what, let me change a few of the details to this otherwise pointless story so that it warrants some genuine outrage. Let's suppose he didn't sell the car, that instead he donated it to a museum where it could be appreciated by Mini lovers for many generations. Only the week after he donates it, the director of the museum deaccensions the car from the museums collection, --sells it off in other words--, and then embezzles the proceeds to spend on crystal meth with a 19 year-old run-away in Las Vesgas.

Now that would be something to be outraged about!!
