cold start problem

it's been cold here for a few weeks now. this morning was 40F - nothing bad really. I went out to the car to leave for work and started it as usual....accessories off, clutch in, foot off the gas. It turned over, sputtered, coughed, shuddered, then seemed to catch itself, running fine.

What the hell? '06 MCS with 3200 miles. Only a DDM airbox and exhaust on the car and we've had similar sporadic issues with our '05 MCS Cabrio (Dinan airbox and MillTek exhaust). A week ago, my '06 also was running very rich for a day....smoking on startup, then fine after a short drive.

Any thoughts on why cold starts are sometimes less than positive?

to a 'T' actually.

Oxygenated gas for winter maybe? I don't recall seeing signs up that we've even switched over yet. Besides, my tank was at '1/4' full this morning and it's been cold since the last fillup. It would seem that I would have had the issue before this morning, since today is no different than any day over the last week.
