I just read about this race that took off from San Francisco yesterday (4/17) that is akin to that "old" movie THE CANNONBALL RUN. They race from SF to Miami in 5 days in high priced cars, but one racer is doing it a MINI! Perhaps the $600,000 Koenigsegg CC 85 will beat it, but I still would love the see the MINI start out each day with the other cars. Keep an eye out down South. I think they're leaving Vegas today.

All I can say is WOW!

 

I have a DVD of last year's rally. It is footage put together by one of the participants. Very entertaining. Those people are nuts. I wish I could participate. It is nice to see people with sick cars driving them like they should be driven. Instead of just putting them on a pedestal.

WHOA! that would be so much fun to take part in....but think about how much money that would be!! some guy said he got 28 tickets in 6 days.....his insurance company is gonna go crazy, but i doubt its nothing he can't afford. that would be a once in a lifetime kinda thing...racing cross country, partying every night, driving cool cars, and having the cops after you everywhere you go.

 

A friend of mine was supposed to be doing it this year, but his financing fell through at the alst minute I was gonna go watch a stage finsh in San Antonio.

The "old" Cannon Ball run movie was actually a rip of of an even OLDER (1976) movie aptly named GUMBALL RALLY. Raul Julia and Gary Busey were both in it. Cant remember any of the other actors. It IMHO, is waaaay better than cannonball run. Check it out

Yeah the movie Gumball came out before Cannonball
but both were based on CAR & Drivers Brock Yates Cannonball Baker sea to shining sea mermorial rally. They actually ran these "unoffical races" from New York to LA in the early to mid 70's. I know their time was beaten but Brock Yates and Dan Gurney did it in a Ferrari in a bit less than 36 hrs during the 2nd race.

 

There was a little movie called Cannonball... with David Carradine and a fancy red bandana around his neck. I believe this was the Hollywood version of What RKMaroon was speaking about. It predates the Cannonball Run and I'm not sure where it fits in with the Gumball Rally. The Gumball rally was the format for Cannonball Run's "SILLINESS", and the star power in Cannonball Run made it a more memorable movie. Then just a couple years ago.... USA Networks TRIED to make a reality show based on it.... It STUNK!

Haven't heard of that race, but my brother and I plan on doing the Cannonball One Lap of America next year with my MINI, and the following year with his '89 T-Bird SC.

I heard that the MINI was prepared at Helix in Philly. Maybe they can chime in if it is their prepped car?
